Neurolinguistics is the study of the neural mechanisms in the human brain that are involved in language. It has its roots in the 19th century work of Broca and Wernicke, who linked specific brain areas to language production and comprehension abilities. The field examines how different linguistic components like phonology, syntax and semantics are represented in the brain and investigates language disorders like aphasia and dyslexia. While language abilities are mostly lateralized to the left hemisphere, the right hemisphere also plays a role. Neurolinguistics seeks to understand where and how the various parts of language are processed in the brain.
