This document summarizes the history and theoretical foundations of sociotechnical systems approaches in the Lowlands region. It discusses 3 waves of sociotechnical systems approaches since the 1960s. The theoretical foundations discussed include interaction network theory, Ashby's law of requisite variety, and social systems theory. Quality of working life and job satisfaction are discussed in relation to job demands and job control. Different organizational regimes like bureaucratic, quality-driven, flexible, and network regimes are presented in relation to business demands around factors like price, quality, flexibility and innovation. Design principles for productive, humane organizations are outlined.
