Different types of
fiction
Section 01
One of the most popular genres of literature, fiction, features imaginary characters
and events.
This genre is often broken up into five subgenres: fantasy, historical fiction,
contemporary fiction, mystery, and science fiction.
● Science fiction stories often take
place in the future and involve
fictional aspects of science and
technology.
- Space or Time travel
- Futuristic setting or alternative
history
- Advance Technology
SCIENCE FICTION
Nonfiction and types of it depending on what you are looking
● A genre of fiction that focuses on
solving crimes and mysterious
events. Ordinarily, the
protagonist is a detective, and the
remaining characters are suspects
until proven otherwise.
- A mysterious crime or death that
needs to be solved
- Suspects that have motives that
the detective must evaluate
MYSTERY
Nonfiction and types of it depending on what you are looking
● A story that takes readers to a
particular time and place in the past,
typically at least 50 years or more in
order for it to be considered historical
fiction. Although the story takes place
in the past, the plot itself is one that
didn't actually happen in history.
- A combination of historical and
fictional experiences
- A setting that exists in a historical
time and place in the past
HISTORICAL FICTION
Nonfiction and types of it depending on what you are looking
● A type of fiction that focuses on
magical and supernatural elements
that do not exist in the actual world.
- Magical elements or characters of
magic, like sorcerers, witches, or
werewolves
- Imaginary worlds, often similar to
medieval settings
- Mythical characters or beings like
elves, dragons, or talking animals
FANTASY
Nonfiction and types of it depending on what you are looking
● A type of fiction in which a story is told that
could easily happen in today's society. It
contains believable characters and events and
takes place in an actual setting, but the
storyline itself is one that has never actually
happened.
- Conflicts that the reader could face in
everyday life
- A setting that takes place in the present day
and is an actual location or a fictional place
that could be real
- Characters that seem like actual people you
might encounter
REALISTIC FICTION
Nonfiction and types of it depending on what you are looking
1. What makes one type of fiction different from
another, and how does this affect the story?
2. How do authors mix different types of fiction to
create new and interesting stories?
3. How does the type of fiction chosen by an author
affect what readers expect and how they connect with
the story, and what role does culture play in shaping our
preferences for certain types of fiction?

STORY
ELEMENTS
COLLAGE
Instructions:
● The class will be divided into five groups.
● Each group needs to provide a large sheet of
paper or poster board, scissors, glue/tape, and a
selection of magazines, newspapers, or printed
images.
● Group members will cut out images and words
from the materials that represent or relate
to characters, setting, plot, and theme.
● For example, they can find pictures of people
for characters, landscapes for settings, action
scenes for plot, and symbols for themes.
Instructions:
● Each group must be creative and think
outside the box when selecting their
images.
● After completing their collages, each
group will present their work to the class.
● They will explain why they chose specific
images for each story element and how
these elements interconnect within their
collage.

Did You Know?
Did you know that a cat uses its whiskers as
feelers to determine if a space is too small to
squeeze through?
Also, cats love to sleep. A fifteen-year-old cat
has probably spent ten years of its life sleeping.
Did you know that dogs can smell your
feelings?
Dogs can pick up on subtle changes in your
scent, which can help him figure out how you
are feeling, such as by smelling your
perspiration when you become nervous or
fearful.
