How Can I Get Myself To React Less?

FEEL THINK DO

                                        2
How can I Get Myself To React Less?

To reduce the amount we react we could try some
  of the following:-

• Deliberately make more of a ‘gap’ between the
  ‘FEEL’ and the ‘DO’.
• Count to ten (or less).
• Be creative in ‘buying yourself’ time.
• Consider more than one option.

                                                  3
How can I Get Myself To React Less?

• Focus on slowing your breathing. Slow deep
breaths – inhale 7, exhale 11. This should help
  slow heart rate.
• Choose & use a personal mantra or image i.e.
  – I am in control of my body....
  – This is just a child.....
  – This could go bad...
  – This is bad for my health...
  – I am the adult...
  – I must model a good response...
                                                    4
How can I Get Myself To React Less?

• Remind yourself that this is not personal.
• Move your attention to someone/something else.
• Go back to your desk/shuffle papers/ look
outside the classroom/focus on a ‘spot’.
• Be aware of muscles – start with face, neck,
  shoulders etc.
• Remember you are more likely to be
irritable/react to minor things when ‘adrenaline
  besotted’.

                                                 5
How can I Get Myself To React Less?
• Spot your inner dialogues that make you most
reactive – the thoughts that perpetuate negative
  feelings.
   – “That Terry is a mean little blighter”
   – “He's always trying to take advantage of me”.
   – “She shows no respect for me or anyone”

• “The individual with the greatest flexibility of
thought and behaviour can and generally will
control the outcome of any interaction”
                                                     6
How can I Get Myself To React Less?
Be aware of your Inner Dialogue. Possible Possible Behaviour
                                   Feelings

“Who does s/he think Anger Aggression
s/he is?”
“How could s/he behave Hurt Non-assertion
like that in my
classroom?”
“This looks nasty: I’d Fear Non-assertion
better go along with it”

“He’s getting annoyed Calmness Assertion
but I’ve seen this
before”.
                                                                   7
How can I Get Myself To React Less?

• Keep control of your own behaviour so you can
  respond assertively.
• Become aware of your own ‘inner dialogue’.
• “Professionals who behave confidently and who
give the impression that things are under control
are less likely to be assaulted or to witness
  assaults”.
• Plan for problem involvement of a second adult.
