New Teacher Go Through Five Distinct Phases: New Teacher Center in Santa Cruz, California Anticipation- July, August Survival- September Disillusionment – October, November, December Rejuvenation- January, February, March Reflection- April, May, June
Anticipation- July, August Hold on to your vision of what you expect teaching to be. Begin building connections with positive teachers at your location, at other schools, or online Keep a journal so that you can get into the habit of looking for the best in each day right from the start. Start a notebook of "Ideas for Next Year."
Survival - September Maintain your momentum by reflecting on what is going well. Talk to other teachers about specific ideas for lessons. Forge a solid connection with at least one teaching peer if you haven't already done so.
Disillusionment – October, November, December Be persistent! Getting through this phase will be one of the greatest challenges you face as a new teacher. Reach out to friends and family who may be feeling neglected. Reach out to your peers. Ask for help or even just a shoulder to lean on. Visit other classrooms. New teachers who have a solid support network make it. Keep journaling!
Rejuvenation - January, February, March Focus on curriculum development and teaching strategies. Try something new with your students. Expand your professional circle of peers to include new and experienced teachers from other schools. Go back and examine your vision of successful teaching. Bump up your action plan a notch.
Reflection - April, May, June Refer to your vision of the successful new teacher as you begin to think ahead. Actively seek out partnerships with other teachers as you begin to envision the possibilities that the next year holds. Go through your "Ideas for Next Year" notebook and pull out the best ideas. Have a special celebration with your students — you will never forget your first class.
Activity Please discuss the question and write down your group’s suggestion/solution.
From Ms. Song- A First Year Teacher Good breakfast! Know the curriculum! Good preparation- Lesson Plan A Must. Good relationship with your supervisor. Good relationship with your student. Know your school culture (Make sure you observe/learn from other teachers) Make sure the technology works before class. Know the school goals and objectives. Be a team player!!!
From Ms. Wang- 2 nd year teacher Be well organized  (Very important especially if you have lots of preps)! Be confident! Have a structure of each of your lesson. Have the unit goal in mind, and then plan your lessons. Share your problems with colleagues, they will often give you very useful feedback. Join school events so you get to know the community better Be proactive in contacting parents Be firm on homework/bathroom/quiz policies. Have students' age in mind and design age appropriate activities
How do you work within the school hierarchy? Who are your supervisors? What are the expectations from your supervisors?
How do we work and collaborate with colleagues? Be Nice to everyone! You don’t have to be congenial, but be collegial!!
