- #3: I think most people feel that the idea that knowledge is power is true. And the reason we’re focussed on this area is that we believe that widespread access to information is absolutely crucial to empower to a more inclusive, open and effective development process, and ultimately enable everyone to make informed choice about their lives. These ideas are not new BUT they are rising up the development agenda every quickly – the digital revolution has made so information so much more easily to disseminate, consume, and create, and is changing peoples expectations - and we have seen over last 4 days that seeds are being sown that show some exciting opportunities for a more inclusive and effective way of doing development
- #4: And we’re starting to see the international political framework to place this at the top of the development agenda
- #5: 59 countries have joined OGP to commit to working towards promoting..Each country develops their own national action planNepal not currently a member One of 97 countries eligible
- #6: This is an area that is getting a lot of traction internationally…..Politcially…..
- #7: Open data underpins and lots of international initiatives and effort to publish better data
- #10: We undertook some research in 2008-0, with UNDP, to ask the question what information do different stakeholder want and why do they want it… which led to the design of IATI The findings was that there are many different reasons why better information on aid is wanted…Aim of IATI is to provide better data that can help answer some of those questions
- #11: And by looking at the numbers in Nepal, it’s clear that aid is an important resources and knowledge about allocation of aid is important to understand the context and engage id discussion.We tend to understand allocation of aid in this way relatively well). However, to increase accountability, and focus on more effective use of aid, looking deeper in to the data and exploring how aid is being executed lead to some interesting questionsWhere, exactly, is the aid hitting the ground? How much? Is is targeting areas where there is most need? Who are the implemtning partners? How traceable is aid? What are the goals? Results? What are the conditions attached? Etc.
- #12: IATI is an attempt to provide data to help answer those sorts of questionsIt’s an International initiative designed to meet country-level needs- and is a multi-stakeholder initiative
