 WHAT IS OPERATING SYSTEM?
operating system is a set of program
which controls and maintains the
computer.
operating system is a software, which
makes a computer to actually work.
It provides a pleasant and effective
interface between the user and the
hardware

 FEATURES OF OS
 Reliable
 Operational at all times
 Should coordinate and have good
control of I/O operations and the
devices on which they are
performed.
 Enhance time sharing.
 STRUCTURE OF OS
Make a computer system easier to use :-
 OS hides details of hardware resources from
programmers and other users .
 It provides the convenient interface to the
programmer for using a computer system.
Manage the resource of computer system:-
 OS manages all the resource of a computer system .
 Efficient and fair sharing of a system resources
among users and programs.

1. PROCESS MANAGEMENT
 By process management OS manages many
kinds of activities: -
 All process from start to shut down
 Save
 Copy
 Print
 Booting
 Send ,etc.
2. MEMORY MANAGEMENT
 The major activities of an operating regard to
memory management are:-
 Decide which process are loaded into
memory when memory space becomes
available.
 Primary RAM-ROM.
 Secondary –Hard Disc ,CD,DVD etc.
3. FILE MANAGEMENT
 The file management system allows the user to
perform such tasks:-
 Creating files and directories
 Renaming files
 Coping and moving files
 Deleting files
4. SECURITY MANAGEMENT
 By security management OS manages many tasks
such as:-
 Alert messages
 Dialogue boxes
 Firewall
 Passwords
 Virus management
5.COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT
 User-Application S/W-Hardware.
 One computer to other computer in
LAN/WAN.
 Command interpretation.
 Downloading-Uploading.
 ADVANTAGES OF OS
 Easy to use
 User friendly
 Intermediate between all hardware’s
and software’s of the system
 No need to know any technical
languages
 It’s the platform of all programs
POPULAR OPERATING SYSTEM
There are two
most popular
operating
system as:-
SINGLE
USER
SYSTEMS
MULTI USER
SYSTEMS
 SINGLE USER SYSTEM
They are popular associated
with desk top operating
system which run on
standalone system where no
user accounts are required.
Example: DOS

 MULTI USER SYSTEMS
Provides regulated access for
a number of users by
maintaining a database of
known users. Refers to
computer systems that support
two or more simultaneous
users.
Example: Unix,Linux,Microsoft
windows etc.
 OS FOR MOBILE DEVICES
Operating system were designed to run on desktop
or laptop computers
Mobile devices such as PHONES,TABLET
COMPUTERS, and MP3 PLAYERS.
Operating systems for mobile devices generally
aren’t as fully featured as those made for desktop
and laptop PC’s.

DISADVANTAGES OF OS
If any problems affected in OS, you
may lose all the contents which have
been stored already
Unwanted user can use your own
system
