Operating systems perform several key functions: 1) Process management which includes booting systems, opening and closing programs, installing and uninstalling software, and performing tasks like printing, scanning, and file transfers. 2) Resource management such as installing drivers and coordinating peripheral devices like keyboards, monitors, printers, and more. 3) File management including naming, organizing, locating, and setting attributes of files and folders.

- 2. Operating System A part of system s/w. System s/w is a collection of programs which control the overall functions of computer. Operating system is a program which monitors, controls and maintains the computer.
- 3. Functions Process Management. Resource Management. File Management. Communication Management. Security Management. Memory Management.
- 4. Process Management. All process from start to shut down. Booting. Open, Save, Install, uninstall, Copy, Delete, Print, Scan, Connect, Send, upload, download etc.
- 5. Resource Management. Installing drivers required for input, output, memory, power, communication devices. Coordinating among peripherals. Keyboard – monitor – mouse – printer – scanner – webcam – speaker etc.
- 6. File Management. Name. Folders. Location. Attributes – size, type, modified, protection, password etc.
- 7. Communication Management. User – Application S/W – Hardware. One computer to other computer in LAN/WAN. Command interpretation. Downloading-Uploading. Showing messages to user including help.
- 8. Memory Management. Primary memory - RAM-ROM. Secondary – Hard Disc, CD, DVD, Pen, Memory card etc. Using appropriate memories to execute task. Displaying memory status. Managing disc maintenance i.e. disc cleanup, defragmentation, my document, Recycle bin etc.
