Operating System
What is Operating System ?
• An operating system (OS) is a type of system software that
oversees and coordinates all the resources of a computer.
• It serves as an intermediary between the application software
and the hardware components of the computer.
• The OS is engineered to efficiently manage and allocate the
computer's resources, facilitating smooth and organized
execution of various tasks and operations.
• An operating system (OS) is a comprehensive suite of
specialized programs that manage the entire functioning of a
computer.
• It oversees and regulates the execution of all programs within
the system, including both application software and other
system software. Examples of operating systems include
Windows, Linux, and macOS.
What is an Operating System used for ?
An operating system (OS) is used for several critical functions that ensure the smooth operation of a
computer. These functions include:
1. Resource Management: The OS manages the computer’s hardware resources, such as the CPU,
memory, disk space, and peripheral devices. It allocates resources as needed to various applications
and processes.
2. Task Scheduling: The OS schedules tasks to ensure efficient use of the CPU and other resources. It
manages the execution of multiple tasks simultaneously, often through techniques like multitasking
and multiprocessing.
3. File Management: The OS handles the creation, deletion, reading, writing, and organization of files
on storage devices. It provides a structured way to store and retrieve data.
4. Security and Access Control: The OS provides mechanisms to protect data and resources from
unauthorized access. It includes user authentication, access permissions, and encryption.
5. User Interface: The OS provides an interface for users to interact with the computer. This can be a
graphical user interface (GUI) with windows, icons, and menus, or a command-line interface (CLI)
where users type commands.
6. Device Management: The OS controls and coordinates the use of hardware devices such as
printers, scanners, and network cards. It ensures that these devices work correctly and efficiently with
the software.
The image depicts different types of operating systems categorized into five groups:
1. Batch Operating System:
This type of OS executes batches of jobs without manual intervention.
2. Time-Sharing Operating System:
It allows multiple users to use the system simultaneously by sharing time slices of the CPU.
3. Distributed Operating System:
This OS manages a group of distinct computers and makes them appear as a single
computer.
4. Real-Time Operating System (RTOS):
RTOS is designed to process data as it comes in, typically for applications requiring strict
timing constraints.
5. Network Operating System (NOS):
It provides services to computers connected to a network, allowing them to share resources.
Types of Operating System
The functions of an operating system (OS) are vital for the overall performance and usability of a
computer. Here are the primary functions:
1. Process Management
2. Memory Management
3. File System Management
4. Device Management
5. Security and Access Control
6. User Interface
7. Network Management
8. System Performance
Monitoring
9. Error Detection and Handling
10. Utilities and Services
What are the functions of an operating system?
There are many operating systems designed for various types of devices and purposes. Some
examples include:
1. Windows
2. macOS
3. Linux
4. UNIX
5. Mobile Operating Systems
6. Server and Mainframe Operating Systems
7. Embedded Operating Systems
8. Other Operating Systems
What are some examples of operating systems?
IT management professionals need to adopt operating system practices to
improve organizational efficiency by streamlining and optimizing workflows and
processes. Operating systems are software tools that allow users to interact with
computer hardware and manage various tasks and resources effectively.
