Editor's Notes

  • #2: Abstract: This talk will cover the various aspects of semantics research at Ordnance Survey, the national mapping agency of Britain. Motivated by the need to make our data more understandable and more easily used by our customers, our aim is to develop an ontology that represents our organisation's knowledge of topography and the data in our spatial database, along with the tools and techniques to merge ontologies and query data through them. This will then allow the integration of our data with our customers' at a semantic rather than syntactical level, as well as enable us to produce customised data products using customers' specialised terminology. Our main areas of research are: Ontology authoring, knowledge modelling and the development of a controlled natural language allowing domain experts to author ontologies; Linking ontologies to databases, both through direct use of RDF data, and the creation of virtual RDF graphs from relational databases; Merging ontologies and data; and Semantic and Spatial reasoning.
