Metaphor A metaphor compares one item with another by saying that it is the other item. Eg. Your room is a pigsty. (Meaning: Your room is so dirty and smelly that it is like a pigsty.)
Purpose : Metaphors make our writing more interesting by making us look at things from a different light. Eg. My brother is a pain in the neck. ( Meaning : My brother gives me a lot of trouble )
Difference between a Metaphor & Simile A metaphor is similar to a simile but it does not use ‘like’ or ‘as … as’ in its comparison. Egs. 1) My fingers are icicles . (metaphor) My fingers are as cold as icicles . (simile)
2) He has a heart of stone . (metaphor) His heart is as hard as stone . (simile) 3) He is a couch potato . (metaphor) He is like a couch potato . (simile)
List of Metaphors You are the apple of my eye . 2) Your eyes are glistening jewels . 3) Sam has the heart of a lion . 4) The size of her brain is that of a walnut . 5) The noise is music to my ears . 6) He is a dog when he eats.
How to write a Metaphor Steps: 1) Choose a subject - eg. my brother Consider his different attributes – eg. physical appearance, character/behaviour, attitude etc. 3) Decide on an attribute such as his physical appearance which you wish to compare him with. Compare him with the chosen attribute to another item. 5) Write a sentence comparing him to another item in respect of the chosen attribute .
Example: 1) Subject: my brother 2) Chosen attribute: physical appearance 3) Compare him with: a flag pole 4) Writing a metaphor to compare him to a flag pole. Metaphor : My brother is a flag pole. (Meaning: My brother is thin and tall like a flag pole.)
Practice Think of at least one metaphor to describe each of the following: my English homework a friend 3) my house
