- 5. Rules for adding –ed: Add –ed to most verbs Drop the “e” and add “ed” to verbs that end with “e” (smile = smiled). Drop the “y” and add –ied to verbs that end with a consonant + “y” (study = studied). Double the consonant and add –ed to verbs that are monosyllables and end consonant + vowel + consonant (stop = stopped). Double the consonant and add –ed to verbs that have more than 1 syllable, end consonant + vowel + consonant and the last syllable is stressed (prefer = preferred).
