Charles M. Schulz
Charles Schulz is a American cartoonist who is
very well known for his successful cartoon strip
series called ‘Peanuts’ which went on for 50
years, and in that time, Schulz make over 18,000
cartoon strips for Peanuts.
Schulz was born in November 26, 1922 and then
died on February 12, 2000 at the age of 77.
Many people think that Schulz is one of the most
influential cartoonists that ever lived.
The creator of Calvin And Hobbes, Bill
Watterson, said that “…Schulz has blazed the
wide trail that most every cartoonist since has
tried to follow.”
He got many awards, and even got his name on a
star on the Hollywood ‘Walk Of Fame’.
Schulz was awarded the Congressional Gold
medal.
Peanuts
Peanuts has quite a few characters but the main
character is the prominent Charlie Brown and Snoopy.
There is a long list of characters but there are the
main 4 that started out the cartoon. These characters
are Charlie, Snoopy, Patty and Shermy.
Peanuts first launched in October 2, 1950 and ended
in January 3, 2000. Peanuts was written and drawn my
Charles Schulz and Schulz never had someone helping
him do his drawing or writing as he felt like he was
cutting corners.
At peanuts highest peak, it had been in over 2,600
newspapers at once, and the amount of people
reading it, were estimated to be roughly 355 million
people over 75 countries.
There were also Peanuts merchandise and a
Peanuts TV show but Schulz said that the comic
Strip and the TV show and very different things
in his eyes.
Charlie Brown
Charlie Brown is the main protagonist of the Peanuts
strip and unlike most comics and drawings, where the
protagonist is a hero and saves the day, things for
Charlie Brown never seem to go his way.
Although things always go wrong for Charlie Brown,
he is still a loveable looser. He is always reffered to by
his full name, with the exception from Peppermint
Patty who calls him Chuck and Marcie who calls him
Charles.
Charlie Brown has lots of Determination and hope but
is always dominated by his insecurities.
Charlie Browns known catch phrase is “Good grief”.
Charlie Brown has a dog called Snoopy who is
considered the second main characters in the Peanuts
strips.
Snoopy
Snoopy start out in the comic strips and a very basic
conventional dog, but later then turned into one of
main characters of the show and also one of the most
recognizable cartoon characters in the world.
Schulz got his idea for Snoopy from his child hood
dog, spike. Snoopy doesn’t talk verbally in the TV
series, his emotions and answers to things are done
thought Growling, sniffing, whistling, snapping his
fingers and other sounds a human could make.
Snoopy’s best friend is a small yellow bird, called
Woodstock. He is a side kick of sorts, snoopy’s
assistant, but also his friend.
For the first time, Snoopy slept on top of his dog
house in 1958, and after that, it was rare for Snoopy
to go inside the dog house, unless he was going in to
retrieve something. It is quite a well known image to
see Snoopy laying on top of his dog house.
Spin off
There was a TV show spin off, of the famous comic
strip Peanuts.
Some of the characters from Peanuts first appeared
on TV, when they were on a commercial for the Ford
Motor Company.
These adverts were animated by Bill Melendez , and
later on, Bill became friends with Charles Schulz .
They then teamed up with Producer Lee Mendelson,
and decided to make a to minute animated
sequence which was called ‘A boy Named Charlie
Brown’. This later lead onto the making of the first
half hour show, called ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’.
The success of the Charlie Brown Christmas lead
onto CBS making many more shows in the future.
They went on to make 30 more animated specials.
