Math Review Lesson UEN Mathematics, Grade 3 Standard 3, Objective 1,2. Describe and compare attributes of two-dimensional shapes. Demonstrate the meaning of congruence through applying transformations Prepare Students for the format that their end of the Year Tests will be in.
As a part of their review on 2-dimensional shapes, students used their I-clickers to demonstrate their understanding of polygons, angles and transformations. We formatted the questions in our review to allow students to practice for the end-of-the-year tests as well as the test they were to take the next day. The review consisted of 25 questions and included true/false questions, and multiple choice questions.
Positives The Students in my third grade class were so excited to use the I-clickers, that it didn’t matter that we were reviewing for a test. That excitement helped them to focus and take advantage of the review. Because we got immediate feedback, we were able to clear up misconceptions right away. Students were comfortable giving their honest responses, which eliminated the “majority response”.
Negatives The pictures weren’t saved on the computer. When we went through the I-clicker review and had questions like “what type of polygon is this?” the pictures were blank. I learned to run through the entire technology program to prevent “technological difficulties” in the future.
Tpack (Student Use of Technology) We used the class laptop, class projector, and school’s I-clicker program to make this review a success. As you can see from the lesson plan and photos, the students were actively doing the work of learning.
Effective Technology Integration While using the I-clickers was a strong motivator for the activity, it helped me as a teacher to see how prepared they were for the test, both as a class and individually.
Effective Technology Integration (cont) The program allows me to ask several specific questions from the mathematics standard. The technology achieves both objectives—review for the test and to practice a future test format. It takes very little time (5-10 minutes) to get students used to the program versus the immense benefit it has on their ability to review the information and ask questions.
Added Technology Value It would not be easier to do this activity without the I-clickers because it become another test. With this use of technology students get to self-assess how well they understand the information, before they are graded. Because I had the technology, I was able to see where they still struggled learning the information and where there might be confusion.
