Who is APZU?
• Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo, Malawi sister organization to
Partners In Health (PIH)
• PIH invited by Malawi government to Neno in 2006
• Strengthen health system in partnership with MOH
– Build hospitals, renovate health centers
– Support HIV and Tuberculosis treatment
– Address underlying causes of disease
– Provide free primary care to all
• Employ 850 individuals, including more than 600

• Figures from Neno District Hospital from
June 1st, 2008 through July 1st, 2010:
– 34,400 patients registered
– 68,000 outpatient encounters recorded*
– 48,100 vitals encounters recorded**
– 25,800 treatment encounters recorded***
* Outpatient data collection began in September, 2008
** Vitals data collection began in July, 2009
*** Treatment data collection began in May, 2009
