Plugging into IoT
A primer on our new connected world and your place in it.
We are going to have a conversation.
But first, let’s learn the IoT language
so that we can share our thoughts.
There are two parts:
One word: “connectivity.”
It’s just like the Internet that we know; web sites
and web services connected by HTTP. But instead
of being connected by HTTP, things are connected
everything from Bluetooth, to Radio Waves, to
WiFi. Anything can talk to or trigger anything!
Key Terms: Network, Platform, Ecosystem, and of
course… Data
Physical objects, living organisms, and digital
applications can all be connected digitally.
The only thing needed is a sensor and a connection
to a network and data can be transmitted about the
actions or state of a thing.
Key Terms: Smart, Connected, Application,
Interface
Internet … and Things
Let’s start with Things

This is where the
magic happens!
The “Internet” is all about connectivity
so let’s focus on the Connected Things
Non-Electronic Connected Things
The Octopus Card is not powered by
electricity but are read by electronic
readers radio wave readers.
Dumb, Connected Things
Many sensors in weather and
healthcare are connected but are
only used to collect data.
Smart, Connected Things
Nest is a smart thermostat that
connects to other products like door
handles and Web applications.
Smart ~ Things that have the ability “sense” their environment or
be manipulated through an interfaces and respond based on this
stimulus. These generally have embedded systems within them.
Connected ~ Things having physical ports or antenna to connect
to servers or other things over networks. Connectivity is the key
to generating data.
The Thing about Things
Application ~ The “business logic” that makes things smart. These
can run within embedded systems or data centers and can be as
simple as an on/off switch or as complex as artificial intelligence.
Interface ~ The point of contact, either physically or digitally
between a thing and a human, thing or network. Smartphone
apps use Graphical User Interfaces (GUI), thermostats use a dial,
and applications are connected through Application
Programming Interfaces (API).
The Thing about Things
Things are networked to create an Internet

Ecosystem
Network ~ The connections that allow data to pass between
things, routers and servers. These could be wired (like Ethernet)
or wireless (like Bluetooth).
Platform ~ Private cloud-based service that stores and manages
large amounts of data. These are usually associated with a brand
like Nest or Particle and have tools for developers.
Ecosystem ~ The concept of creating a system that connects
things, platforms, and people that build upon one another.
What Connects the Internet
The in’s and out’s
of Interfaces
Inputs are how a thing gets
information from its
environment. These could be
sensors or a user interface.
This could be things humans can sense,
or things that we can’t.
This could be things humans can do
and many things we can’t do.
Outputs are how things act
upon their environment.
The in’s and out’s
of Interfaces
We can make
everything smart
We can
connect anything

the things
