What Is A Project?

• A project is a temporary
  endeavour to create unique
  results.

                     training needs.
What Is A Project?
• Examples of projects in different industries
  include:
  – Your final year thesis in university.
  – If you plan your life or career, each phase. You can and
should decided what you want to have achieved every
3 to 5 years, what to do to achieve it and at what cost.
  – Planning to cook 3 course means for a 500 man event
    on a particular day.
  – Designing and sewing a 5,000 shirts, 3, 000 trousers &
2,000 suits for a new fashion line to be released by a
    particular date.
  – Building a house is a project.
                    www.protrainingcentre.com For your
                                                           4
                              training needs.
What Is A Project?
   – Writing a book, editing and sending it for printing in
time for a pre-announced release date.
   – Reducing a procedure that takes 5 days to 3 days.
   – Planning an three hundred house estate with 3
hospitals, 2 sports centres, and 2 leisure centres.
• These are projects in different industries which you
may have been involved in, regardless of whether the
  projects were successful or not.
• This program focuses on teaching you what to do to
increase the chances of your projects being
successful(achieve the project’s objectives on time and
  within budget).

                     www.protrainingcentre.com For your

                               training needs.
Project Management
• Many project’s are managed arbitrarily, without any
  agreed time(schedule) or cost(budget) constraints
which leads to a waste of resources and time. Working
on a project does not necessarily mean you are
  managing it(practicing project management).
• Just working on projects without pro-actively managing
them takes much longer and costs a lot more than they
will have if the project was managed using project
management best practices as prescribed by the
  Project Management Institute(PMI).

                   www.protrainingcentre.com For your

                             training needs.
Project Management
• These best practices are a collection of
processes and procedures as found in the
world’s most successful organization and are
meant to help you manage and control your
  projects.

                           training needs.
Project Management
• Project management involves doing most of
the following before the actual work starts:
  – Determining requirements and agreeing what
    needs to be done(scope).
  – Determining how long(time) it should take and
    how much it should cost(cost).
  – Getting the right people with the right skillset and
    experience(human resources) together to make
    sure it is done right.

                   www.protrainingcentre.com For your

                             training needs.
Project Management
– Predicting any unplanned and unknown events that
may occur and planning what to do if they do
  occur(risk).
– Deciding which skills or equipment are better off
being outsourced from outside the project
  organization(procurement).
– Making sure all the above are followed as the work is
done and any requested changes are necessary,
  assessed and approved before being
  implemented(Integration).
– Making sure relevant rules and regulations are
obeyed, making the right decisions when faced with
  potential conflict(ethics & professional behaviour).

Project Management
• All the highlighted words make up what are called
the Knowledge Areas. They are involved in ALL
projects regardless of industry, location or
  objectives.
• ALL projects have a scope(objectives), a time
  frame(planned or otherwise), cost(budgeted or
  not), quality standards, risk,
  communication(between stakeholders),
procurements which all need to be tied
  together(integrated) to achieve project
  objectives.

Project Management
• Managing projects involves guiding your
project a project management life cycle which
consists of 5 stages called Process Groups.
  These are:
  – Initiating
  – Planning
  – Executing
  – Monitoring & Controlling
  – Closing

Project Management
• ALL projects whether in medicine, finance,
catering, fashion design, engineering etc, will
involve all these knowledge areas and process
  groups.
• This is why the PMP(or CAPM) is said to apply
to all industries, like an MBA.

                 www.protrainingcentre.com For your

                           training needs.
Project Management
• For a project to be considered successful, it must
have delivered its objectives or result (also known
as the project’s scope) within the planned time
  and within the agreed budget.
• This combination of Scope, Cost and Time is
called the Triple Constraint or Iron Triangle.
• As a project manager, your focus and everything
you do, is geared towards delivering on the triple
  constraint(scope, cost and time).
                  www.protrainingcentre.com For your

Online PMP Training, Nigeria: Introduction to Projects and Project Management
Project Management
• It is called a triple constraint because once set those
parameters(scope, cost or time) cannot be arbitrarily
  changed. They must be achieved.
• It is called an Iron triangle because if any one of the
parameters change, the other two will be impacted
  and most likely change.
• Therefore if there is a need to change any of them, say
scope is increased(more work is added to the project).
A change request will be officially raised. In a process
called Integrated Change Control, the effect of this
requested change on the cost and time will be
assessed. Both will most likely have to be increased.

                    www.protrainingcentre.com For your

Project Management
• If it finishes later than planned, costs more than
was budgeted or didn’t fully deliver on the
scope(objectives), then the project is said to have
  failed.
• E.g. If it was meant to cost N7 million and 15 days
to come up with a concept, shoot, edit and
produce a video for Omawumi’s new single and
you have spent N8million before you even start
editing, this is a failed project and Omawumi may
  decide to cancel the project.

Project Management
• Your landlord gives you 6 months notice to vacate
his property which you are currently renting. You
decide to build a 3 bed house(scope) of your own
for N16m(cost) and be ready to move in at the
  end of the sixth month(time).
• If you do not finish it by the end of the sixth
  month, you will be destitute.
• If you spend N16m and still have not done the
roofing or the plumbing system, and you have run
out of money, the project will be abandoned like
many abandoned buildings all over the country.
                  www.protrainingcentre.com For your

                            training needs.
Project Management
• To the ordinary person:
  – Finishing the shoot in 7 days with N15m has more
to do with luck than anything else. They may also
say that if it’s anybody’s fault, it is Omawumi or
    her manager’s fault.
  – The house too was not completed because the
plumber came to site late, or was incompetent,
you were unlucky that the roofing manufacturers
went on strike when you were ready to buy the
roofing material, or a myriad of other reasons.

                            training needs.
Project Management
• The truth is practicing or applying the project
management principles on this program will have
helped you avoid the project failures earlier
  described.
• It will have warned you much earlier in the
project that you were spending too much money
too fast on accomplishing too little work. That
way, you will have had a chance to control costs
and bring the project back under control.
                 www.protrainingcentre.com For your
                                                      20
                           training needs.
Project Management
• In the case of building your house, it will have told you
that 6 months was too little time to source for land,
buy it, design your house, get approval, build and move
  in.
• It will have helped you know much earlier in the
project that you were spending too much money too
fast and accomplishing precious little work.
• It may have made you realize that a better option will
be to rent elsewhere for 2 years and use the rest of the
money to start a business or get a few professional
certifications that will increase your pay check and
allow you to hire more reliable contractors.

                    www.protrainingcentre.com For your
                                                         21
                              training needs.
Project Management
• Practicing or applying project management principles
will have made you consider so many options, choose
the best and then follow it through to completion
despite all the setbacks and ‘bad luck events’ that will
  occur.
• Project management helps achieve this by planning
what needs to be done, how much it will cost, how
long it will take, identifying what may go wrong and
what to do if it does, soliciting expert knowledge,
monitoring the project as it progresses and comparing
it to the plan to ensure they are both the same. If they
are not, and this will happen, corrective or preventive
action is taken to rectify the situation.

Project Management
• Organizations in Nigeria that use or rely on PMP
  formally or informally include:
  – Skye Bank
  – GT Bank
  – AVIAT Networks
  – Chevron
  – Alcatel-Lucent
  – Stanbic IBTC Holdings
  – Starcomms
  – Glo
  – Dangote, etc

  • 11. Project Management • Managing projects involves guiding your project a project management life cycle which consists of 5 stages called Process Groups. These are: – Initiating – Planning – Executing – Monitoring & Controlling – Closing www.protrainingcentre.com For your 11 training needs.
  • 12. Project Management • ALL projects whether in medicine, finance, catering, fashion design, engineering etc, will involve all these knowledge areas and process groups. • This is why the PMP(or CAPM) is said to apply to all industries, like an MBA. www.protrainingcentre.com For your 12 training needs.
  • 13. Project Management • For a project to be considered successful, it must have delivered its objectives or result (also known as the project’s scope) within the planned time and within the agreed budget. • This combination of Scope, Cost and Time is called the Triple Constraint or Iron Triangle. • As a project manager, your focus and everything you do, is geared towards delivering on the triple constraint(scope, cost and time). www.protrainingcentre.com For your 13 training needs.
  • 15. Project Management • It is called a triple constraint because once set those parameters(scope, cost or time) cannot be arbitrarily changed. They must be achieved. • It is called an Iron triangle because if any one of the parameters change, the other two will be impacted and most likely change. • Therefore if there is a need to change any of them, say scope is increased(more work is added to the project). A change request will be officially raised. In a process called Integrated Change Control, the effect of this requested change on the cost and time will be assessed. Both will most likely have to be increased. www.protrainingcentre.com For your 15 training needs.
  • 16. Project Management • If it finishes later than planned, costs more than was budgeted or didn’t fully deliver on the scope(objectives), then the project is said to have failed. • E.g. If it was meant to cost N7 million and 15 days to come up with a concept, shoot, edit and produce a video for Omawumi’s new single and you have spent N8million before you even start editing, this is a failed project and Omawumi may decide to cancel the project. www.protrainingcentre.com For your 16 training needs.

  • 18. Project Management • Your landlord gives you 6 months notice to vacate his property which you are currently renting. You decide to build a 3 bed house(scope) of your own for N16m(cost) and be ready to move in at the end of the sixth month(time). • If you do not finish it by the end of the sixth month, you will be destitute. • If you spend N16m and still have not done the roofing or the plumbing system, and you have run out of money, the project will be abandoned like many abandoned buildings all over the country. www.protrainingcentre.com For your 18 training needs.
  • 19. Project Management • To the ordinary person: – Finishing the shoot in 7 days with N15m has more to do with luck than anything else. They may also say that if it’s anybody’s fault, it is Omawumi or her manager’s fault. – The house too was not completed because the plumber came to site late, or was incompetent, you were unlucky that the roofing manufacturers went on strike when you were ready to buy the roofing material, or a myriad of other reasons. www.protrainingcentre.com For your 19 training needs.
  • 20. Project Management • The truth is practicing or applying the project management principles on this program will have helped you avoid the project failures earlier described. • It will have warned you much earlier in the project that you were spending too much money too fast on accomplishing too little work. That way, you will have had a chance to control costs and bring the project back under control. www.protrainingcentre.com For your 20 training needs.
  • 21. Project Management • In the case of building your house, it will have told you that 6 months was too little time to source for land, buy it, design your house, get approval, build and move in. • It will have helped you know much earlier in the project that you were spending too much money too fast and accomplishing precious little work. • It may have made you realize that a better option will be to rent elsewhere for 2 years and use the rest of the money to start a business or get a few professional certifications that will increase your pay check and allow you to hire more reliable contractors. www.protrainingcentre.com For your 21 training needs.
  • 22. Project Management • Practicing or applying project management principles will have made you consider so many options, choose the best and then follow it through to completion despite all the setbacks and ‘bad luck events’ that will occur. • Project management helps achieve this by planning what needs to be done, how much it will cost, how long it will take, identifying what may go wrong and what to do if it does, soliciting expert knowledge, monitoring the project as it progresses and comparing it to the plan to ensure they are both the same. If they are not, and this will happen, corrective or preventive action is taken to rectify the situation. www.protrainingcentre.com For your 22 training needs.
