Good or bad, Internet plays major role in our lives Access to massive amount of information Instantaneous communication More relaxed learning pace Strengths can also be weaknesses
Internet can counter some goals for prevention Bad/faulty information on Internet Perception of Internet as difficult to use Appropriateness of material Excess of information – where to begin?
Search Engines & Meta-Engines Search Engines – Yahoo!, Google, etc “ Meta-engines”, e.g., dogpile.com, are “search engines for search engines” Sites geared just for youth – thecoolspot.gov, freevibe.com, thetruth.com When in doubt, go to the “About Us” page Group Exercise Take out of your packet the two printed internet sites and read them. Ask yourself what point of view are they trying to connote, and which one seems more “objective”
Search Ranking – Things to Keep In Mind Google – ranks according to hits on site as well as frequency of words On sites like Yahoo!, can pay to have higher ranking It is crucial to have critical skills and be able to determine good sites from bad sites Example – search for “youth tobacco prevention” found following rankings:
Example of program using Internet: Jennings Middle School Part of Jennings C2000 Work Plan Goal of program: To create a program that would teach middle school students to use the Internet to find prevention information and apply it within own curriculum Eight week time frame for implementation of program (even though scheduled for six week time frame)
Jennings – Initial Stages Determine shape of program Utilize students in Stars & Heroes after school program Decided on game show format Break down project into schedule Consulted with another Support Center on similar program Drew Up Formal Proposal Began program Initial size – 30 students Met for one hour twice a week
Challenges As program progressed, dealt with unique challenges Half of students dropped out due to timing conflicts/lack of interest School schedule & emergencies Students needed to learn how to tell good/valid information from “propaganda” Range of information – different sites might provide variations on a theme
Sample Questions True or False: When you smoke marijuana, it does not impair your driving (False – cite crash statistics) How many different chemicals are there in cigarettes? (4000) How long does it take the human body on average to metabolize one alcoholic drink? (approximately one hour)
Jennings Project Recruit Online Research Team Contest Final Rounds FEB MAR APR 3 10 17 24 2 9 16 23 30 6 13 20 27 Questions Written

Jennings – Lessons Learned With some structure, you can create a fun project involving research Have kids who want to do the project Adult moderator should write questions – have tougher questions for elimination rounds Continually reinforce positive behavior and serve as role model
Other Internet Resources: E-mail lists Maximum Output Can reach large number individually Ease of communication E-mail is readily accessible Various free e-mail providers (www.emailaddresses.com) Weaknesses Some free listservs (like Yahoo Groups!) are advertiser supported Dependent on online access, even to external sources (like library)
