The ASPCA was founded in 1866 in New York and was the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere. Their mission is to prevent cruelty to animals throughout the United States. They work nationally to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws, and share resources with shelters. The ASPCA runs various programs to help animals, including an animal behavior center, poison control center, and grants for other organizations. Currently, they are fighting puppy mills which can cause health and behavior issues for dogs due to overcrowding and continuous breeding.
