VISUAL STYLESAN ANALYSIS OF 4 VISUAL STYLES
MODERN RETRO
BACKGROUND
- Came to light digitally in the 1970’s but initially developed in the 1950-60’s
- Encouraged by use from the Beatles and Sex pistols
- Takes old styles to give them a modern touch
- The entire style is a branch from pop art, with pop art being a very vibrant style, modern retro takes these aspects and
makes them more vintage
- The style is vastly used in posters and gaming
- Designers tend to take retro items and objects such as turntables and incorporate them into their designs
- Examples of this is style is in the opening of the film ‘Yellow Submarine’ and ‘Sgt. Peppers lonely hearts club band’ by The
Beatles
- The colours use stand out from the background yet doesn’t take all the focus as
there is detail behind the two men as well
- We can see the use of a bowlers hat and cane which signifies Charlie Chaplin,
this complies to how the style takes vintage ideas and modernises them in a
form of art
- The target audience of Modern Retro would be both old and young for opposing
reasons. This piece would be very effective due to the Charlie Chaplin
inference, as well as how it is very mesmerising and vibrant.
- It would be effective to an engaged audience as it allows them to deeply
analyse the work.
- These pieces of art incorporate photography to them be digitalised and edited.
With this, we can see how a mid shot is being used, with the subjects avoiding
the middle. This mode of composition takes them out of significant focus,
leaving the audience to question what they are looking at, rather than leaving
them to question the two men alone.
- This style, being relatively diverse in terms of composition and balance of direct and indirect address, could be good to
adapt to my own work. I could use this to create an identity of ‘question’ and inference, allowing the more engaged
audience to pick apart what I present, just like I tried to do in my actual music video.
ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND
- The word abstract means to separate something from something else
- Carries a moral dimension
- Abstract art involves both graphic design and sculptures
- Came to light in the 1910-20s
- Naum Gabo, a Russian constructivist, was considered the pioneer of the style alongside Kazimir Malevich and Piet
Mondrian
- Features of the style would include fragmented geometry and random patterns
- Artists would tend to use this style to express themselves – looking like a modernist version of expressionism
- The style is examples in the self titled album ‘Stone Roses’
- In this cover art, we can see how it incorporates multiple elements of design
- Abstract art is now commonly used in home designs and posters
- This piece uses geometry and vibrant colours which would instantly engage the
audience
- The more geometric pieces would be more appealing to an older, more sophisticated
audience due to its elegancy
- Whereas the more random and expressionist pieces would appeal more to a younger
audience
- This piece of work could be a way to engage all audiences in terms of finding a pattern
in the design, looking at all the sections, trying to see similarities and differences even
though at a first glace it looks very random
- Through this, the work is very effective as it is misdirecting and takes a few moments of
looking at to understand
- I could take the geometric aspect of this style to apply to my own work as the song that im using has a structured and
repetitive beat which could link well to the idea of a pattern. However, it would be hard to use any other aspect as my song
and video isn’t as expressionist as this style of art
SURREALISM
BACKGROUND
- Surrealism aimed to revolutionise life and give it a more dream-like aspect
- Artists used this platform to unlock their minds and ease psychological tensions
- The word ‘Surrealist’ sparked from a play by Guillaume Apollinaire, a French playwriter
- Yet Andre Breton defined the term in 1924 as ‘pure psychic automatism, by which one proposes to express, either verbally,
in writing, or by any other manner, the real functioning of thought. Dictation of thought in the absence of all control
exercised by reason, outside of all aesthetic and moral preoccupation.’
- Major figures include Breton, Dalí, Ernst and Magritte
- The style of design, as mentioned, is very augmented and dream-like
- Artists would take stable and common ideas to alter and allow to lose control
- As also mentioned, the artists would use this as a way to ease psychological tension which gives reason for all pieces of
work to be vastly different, however, they all follow and conform to the way that it is generally a make believe piece of work,
therefore the style can easily be identified.
- This style was taken on by the band ‘Birth Control’ for their album ‘Plastic People’ in 1975
- This piece very much complies to the aspect of being dream-like
- The way that the underside of the whale is a seaside depiction creates
a rather atmospheric piece of art
- The image as a whole looks like a collaboration of the sky, sea and
land which seems again very atmospheric. This could make the
audience feel engaged as if they want to be there.
- There is a lack of negative space to emphasise the whole aura of the
design style. As typically in a dream, there is so much going on to
concentrate on
- Through all this, the image is very effective as there is a lot going on
and a lot to focus on. This means that again, similar to the artwork od
Modern Retro, he more engaged audiences can infer from the pieces.
- Again, similar to the style of Modern Retro, I can use some aspects in my own production as the audience of this
movement is those who find strong engagement in art and media texts, so, similar to my music video, they could create
inferences from my production work. I could also take the idea of a fragmented reality, which links well to my video too.
CONSTRUCTIVISM
BACKGROUND
- It gained popularity in 1917 onwards when the Bolsheviks came to power in the October Revolution in Russia
- It borrowed ideas from Futurism and Supremacism yet also closely shows relevance to the Bauhaus movement in
Germany
- A key figure in Constructivism was Vladimir Tatlin, he was influenced by Picassos cubist art and therefore took it onto
himself to replicate it using materials
- The style is very bold and colourful
- It incorporates shapes and abstract composition
- The colours are very bold. When the style first came around, Primary colours were used as they stand out
- The style is, and always has been used in propaganda. Examples being Bolshevik propaganda in Russia when the
style originated
- In propaganda, it is common to have bold fonts and images which connote unity or emphasise the cause being fought
for
- This piece of propaganda style work complies well to the general aspect of
constructivism
- Bold/mainly primary colours are used
- The font is very bold and contrasts the background well which will make it stand out
from the other bold features. Therefore, making it very effective as a piece of
propaganda
- This poster, unlike the other two propaganda posters on this slide, is directly
addressing the audience. This is effective as it makes it more personal
- It includes a figure too, which is typical iconography of constructivism propaganda art
- In terms of using this style in my print production, it would not relate too closely with
my music video or the brand I wat to create. I would prefer t have more of a subtle
and casual image for my band rather than a bold and pragmatic one. Overall, if I was
to use elements of this style in my production, I would take on the more modern
adaptions which show similarities to the Bauhaus movement and focus mainly on
geometry and more subtle colours – which could link quite well to the image I have
created in the video.
