Teachers teach students at three levels. They have to keep in mind
about the developmental stage of the learners so that desired
educational objectives can be achieved. These three levels are.
Memory level: Thoughtless teaching.
Understanding level: Thoughtful teaching.
Reflective level: Upper thoughtful level
Hierarchy of Levels of Teaching ?
Reflective Level
Understanding Level
Memory Level
Most Thoughtful
Less Thoughtful
Thoughtful
What is Memory level Teaching ?
Objective – To impart information or Knowledge
• Supported by Herbert’s theory of Appreciation.
• Covers only the knowledge based objective of Bloom’s Taxonomy.
• First stage of Teaching.
• Factual in Nature.
• Useful in Lower Classes
• Teacher dominated methods are used like drill, review, revision and asking
questions.
• Evaluation system – oral, written and essay-type examination.
Merits of Memory level Teaching ?
• Useful for young children.
• Helpful in learning new concepts.
• Useful for slow learners.
• Base for understanding and reflective levels.
Demerits of Memory level Teaching ?
• Not Suitable for higher classes.
• Dominance of teacher.
• Little interaction in the classroom.
• Loss of retention and recall.
• Use of rote memory.
• Problem of classroom management.
What is Understanding level of Teaching ?
Objective – To develop the cognitive abilities of the students.
• Understanding level of teaching explain pupils about the relationship
between principles and facts.
• It also lets students know where these principles are applicable.

Merits of Understanding level
Teaching ?
