This presentation analyzes user story size estimate and task hour data from several Agile teams to understand the impact of uncertainty on estimates. The analysis shows there is significant variation in actual task hours for each story size, indicating estimates are often too high or low. This variation is caused by uncertainty about the work needed. Reducing this uncertainty, such as by splitting stories smaller, would improve estimation accuracy. The key is gaining a better understanding of the work scope for each story.
