Practice task
THE IDEA:
As the theme we were given was a documentary about love, we
brainstormed about many different ideas, such as a dating programme
watching real couples go on blind dates, or a view into a married
household. We eventually decided that a video montage showing
couples in a school setting would be best.
We chose this as:
• We wanted to practice making montages as we knew that we wanted it
to be present in our main film.
• We could see how much footage would be needed for a short two
minute montage, whether we would need only a few recordings of clips
that we could cut up, or if we needed lots of different shots.
• It also tests our editing skills to see if we can put our large amount of
footage in an order that flows well in a montage.
THE PROBLEMS:
Unfortunately despite having our ideas planned out we ended up struggling
quite a lot.
• Our friends didn’t want to be filmed. Which means we never got the
footage and never achieved our goal of a 2 minute documentary
montage.
• We struggled with communication, so deciding who was filming what in
their spare time became an issue. As there were a lot of timing clashes
so we could not all film together.
• Because we couldn't find people to film, we didn’t have enough footage
and therefore editing was more an effort to try and put in as much of the
footage as we had. Instead of using it to it’s best potential.
WHAT WE’VE LEARNED
From this experience, we have had to learn how we will improve for our
main task where we will film a documentary.
• We are going to encourage more teamwork and communication in the
group. Creating WhatsApp groups and Facebook groups to make sure
everyone knows what they’re doing.
• If our friends wont be in the film we need to have the confidence to ask
people we don’t know to participate in it.
• We realised that when our documentary started going wrong in the
practice task we gave up and didn’t pursue finishing it. This won’t be an
option in our main task so we need to work on not being discouraged
when things go wrong.
