Preliminary Reanalysis - Question 7
I noticed that whilst creating a preliminary,
planning is still a key fixture when it comes to
filming. Even though creating a plan doesn’t
always mean that the film will stick exactly to
it, it helps to have something to always refer to
as a stimulus for your film. These next slides
will consider the following aspects that went
well during the preliminary and improvements
that could and have been considered for the
constructing of my finale project.
Particularly, I enjoyed looking towards the editing
of my shots as well as the sound. I thought that by
having a theme that showed dominance between
the two main subjects could be shown based on
the cinematography, which is the reason why I
displayed a low and high angle shot. As well as
doing this, I wanted to develop the subjects point
of view in where they were sitting/ standing so
that the audience could feel as though they were
the character themselves.
Using simplistic equipment was something I thought would be key to
making a straight forward preliminary scene. I wanted to cover all the
aspects that was meant to be done, match on action and shot reverse shot.
As no complex shots were in order, I chose to use an amp that would be
able to use ensure that the shots would be easily visible and the iPad app,
Cute Cut was sufficient enough to did this.
One feature that I considered to be a needed improvement was the sound.
Although I was trying to generate an atmosphere that was resembling the
dialogue between the two by having a hip-hop/rap track, being
stereotypically referred to as having concepts that revolve around money,
drugs and sex, the background music cuts from one song to another part of
it due to me not pausing the song when changing one shot to another.
This meant that the shots don’t flow as well as they could of as the song
cuts unexpectedly, meaning that focus comes off of the characters and onto
thinking ‘what happened to the music?’.
For my first attempt at filming, I wasn’t too aware to how much camera quality was
a vital attribute to filming. This is the reason why I chose to use my the iPad software
Cute Cut as I thought it would be suitable for getting shots whilst the mobile when
tracking the subject when walking into the room and towards the other character.
In terms of static camera footage, however, this became a problem as the only real
way that I managed to gain a decent stable shot was to try and be still as possible or
lean my elbows against the table for the low angle shot.
For my actual opening film, instead of having the song play whilst recording
the scene, I realised that having music that was added in the editing section
of filming was a better way of syncing the music.
This gave me more control over what I could do with the music such as
lowering and fading the volume so that it can be heard but doesn’t
overpower what is being said by the subjects as well as being able to cut
from one track to another, depending on the focus.
Furthermore, being able to rethink and change completely different was
another prospect that proved to be valuable as my introduction for my logos
and distribution companies had no sound and developing any atmosphere
should be done swiftly and as quick as possible to gain the right analysis by
the audience.
Researching for my preliminary lead to developing a film that in fact wasn’t about crime
thriller similar to Seven and The Dark Knight but rather a thriller that was more through
provoking in its plot, such as Inception and the Adjustment Bureau, which both became
my main to stimulus models. With this in mind, I made sure not to role out the other
films not only did they do well with audiences but also Christopher Nolan produced both
The Dark Knight and Inception. Having developed both films should of meant that I
could of chose The Dark Knight as my other stimulus, however, I wanted to expand
towards creating a film that had original appeal towards it rather than constructing and
reinventing a classic, such as Batman.
