- 2. I recently saw and felt inflammation on my nose, so I knew I had a type of dermatitis. Since I knew I had this anomaly, I called a dermatologist, a physician who is a specialist in treating skin disorders. The dermatologist told me that, yes, I had redness & inflammation in my face, and, since this was an abnormality, he said I had a type of dermatosis. The doctor informed me that I also had a black tumor on my nose. “What’s that?”, I asked. “Oh, that’s only melanoma”’ replied the doctor. “I’ll get rid of that, too”. “ What’s melanoma?”, I asked the doctor. “Melanoma is a black tumor which, in your case, was probably caused by overexposure to harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. You now have billions of melanocytes on your nose, but, don’t worry, I’ll fix you right up”. The dermatologist brought out his dermatome, or scalpel, and asked for my consent to have him cut off my nose. I then asked the dermatologist what he specialized in in medical school. He assured me that he specialized in the study of the skin, aka dermatology.
