- 2. Abbreviations • In the medical field there are many acronyms used throughout different departments. Here are some abbreviations that land in the Urinary System category. • AGN- acute glomerulonephritis • CC- clean catch urine specimen • UC- urine culture • I&O intake and output • UTI- urinary tract infection • HD- hemodialysis • BNO- bladder neck obstruction
- 3. ESWL= Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy • Uses shock waves to break a kidney stone into small pieces that can more easily travel through the urinary tract and pass from the body. • This is an outpatient procedure • ESWL works for most people who have small kidney stones- either in the kidney or in the ureter • This picture presents a shock wave going through a kidney. - 4. RP= Retrograde Pyleogram • A RP is an imaging test that uses X-rays to look at your kidneys. • They use a dye that is inserted through the urethra to outline the bladder, ureters, and renal pelvis. • This procedure is done if the healthcare provider thinks something is blocking your kidneys or ureters.
- 5. Retrograde Pyelogram ~ This picture displays how the X-ray image and dye outlines the bladder, ureters, and renal pelvis (Retrograde Pyelogram, n.d.). ~ It also is used to identify a possible causes of blood in your urine
- 6. ARF= Acute Renal Failure • ARF occurs when your kidneys suddenly stop working. • The kidneys cannot filter waste from the blood • ARF can be caused by an: • Infection • Medications • An injury • Blockage such as kidney stones
- 7. cysto= cystoscopy • Cystoscopy is a test that allows your doctor to look at the inside of your bladder and urethra. • The instrument used is a thin, lighted tube called a cystoscope. • The picture shows the cystoscope during the procedure by the healthcare provider. BUN= Blood urea nitrogen • BUN test measures the mount of nitrogen in your blood that comes from the waste product area. • This test is to see how well your kidneys are working and if your kidneys are not able to remove urea from the blood normally, your BUN level rises. • Urea is made when protein is broken down in your body. Urea is made in the liver and passed out of your body in the urine.
