Aer Lingus Pilot Training
• Aer Lingus operates in a highly regulated environment
• Objective being to ensure Passenger and Crew Safety at all times
• Irish Aviation Authority (The IAA)
– Mandate a 3-year cycle of recurrent training for all Pilots
– Determine the content of this training, in conjunction with Aer Lingus
– Insist on records being maintained so that Aer Lingus can demonstrate
compliance and can show that all Pilots have completed the training
• Pilots who do not complete the training cannot fly – license is removed
Situation pre-Moodle
• Training and Instructor Pilots
– Developed course content based on Aer Lingus and IAA requirements
– Delivered training in a Class Room
– Included a written exam
• This meant the release of staff to attend the training
• Costs (and time) associated with this
• Easy to show compliance – paper based records

• Online delivery of training
• Rapid Development of training content
• Tailored to our environment
• Ability to record and track
• Demonstrate compliance to IAA
• Interface with Crew Admin Application to record training undertaken
• Reduction in costs

Training Project
• Aer Lingus had an existing supplier of pre-determined training
– MS Office
– Soft Skills
– IT courses
• Investigated options with this supplier
• Had product and was possible but
– Costs
– Time
– Aer Lingus would not be able to load courses directly to the LMS.
Requirement for their vetting and approval and them to load to LMS
– Issues with demonstration of compliance
• Contacts made with other customers for their views etc

Enovation and Moodle
• Enovation recommended through external contacts
• Enovation also a supplier to Aer Lingus – testing tools for web
• Responded to our requirements
• Reference Customers in Ireland
• “Test course” given to both suppliers
• Assisted in evaluation of products
• Decision taken to go with Moodle/Enovation
– Costs
– Timelines
– Rapid Delivery
– Track record – existing customers

• Delivered on budget
• Positive reaction from Pilots
• Now expanded to additional Pilot Training
• And Cabin Crew Training
• Accepted as the method of delivering on line training
