Making A Difference
-RecyclingBy:

The Problem
• The Knox College Recycling system could be more effective
• Current waste removal expenses per year- $20,000-25,000
• Current recycling removal expenses per year- $3,000

• Current recycling
• 70.64 tons

All data was collected November 2nd, 2013 by Robin Delaquess and Rebekah Heusel
Proposal
• Ideal Solution
• Switch to a duo waste container system (recycling and garbage)
• Add sorted recycling in Post Hall
• Total cost - $30,800 (each bin $700)

• Realistic solution
• 14 new recycling bins in key locations
• add sorted recycling in Post Hall
• Total cost- $9,800
Proposal
- why the price difference• For a complete duo recycling system we would need 44 new bins
Waste Receptacles on Campus by Location
• 14 bins in select areas would still be effective
• 2- apartment housing
• 8- two at each field (four fields total)
• 2- quads
• 1- gizmo patio
• 1- townhouses
• This would only mean the 4 current student workers
who collect recycling would need to pick up an
additional 3-4 bins

Effects
• With the ideal solution we would expect to see a 154% increase in recycling
tonnage
• Note- Based on increase at Denison University

• With the modified solution of 14 bins we would expect to see a 49%
increase
• Percent increase is based on peer institutions implementing similar policies

Denison University
Recycling increase
• 2004-05 = 130 tons
• 2011-12 = 330 tons
154% recycling increase
Implement duo recycling bin system
outdoors
Have sorted recycling areas throughout
campus

Luther College
• 1994- 60% items in one days trash pick
up were recyclable materials
• Total recycling = approx. 160.9 tons
• Sustainable Endowments institute gave
an “A” Rating (one of 26 colleges)

Big Picture Environmental Impact
• Energy saved by using recycled
materials
• Aluminum- 95%
• Glass- 50%
• Paper- 60%

• Just by recycling paper,

aluminum, and plastic you would
save 44.3 cubic yards of landfill
space per 3 tons of recycling

University, Fall 2000. Web. 20 Nov. 2013. <http://bgm.stanford.edu/pssi_faq_benefits>.
Environmental Impact
• Currently recycle 70.64 tons
• with implementation of 14 bins with an increase of 49% we expect to increase
recycling to 105.25 tons

• That would total a savings of 1554 cubic yards of land fill space
• Remember that is only accounting for plastic, paper, and aluminum
