Economical Surfaces
Traditional Computing Vs. Surface Computing

                         Surface Computing
                         You can use your
                          fingers for input.
                         It provides direct
                          interaction to user.
                         It provides Multi-touch
                          & Multi-user
                          environment.
                         It also support object
                          recognition .
Surface Computing in Academia

Multi User Interaction
• In Academia’s Perspective these economical surface may be
  very effective: provides Multi-touch / Multi-user environment,
i.e., many students can perform different activities
  simultaneously.

Interactive and Easy-to-Use
• These surfaces are very Interactive and easy-to-use such that a
kindergarten to a qualified one can operate with it
   conveniently.
Design & Development of DeskTAP

Building blocks of DeskTAP
• Hardware
• Software
       Hardware
       Hardware consists of
       Wooden Table
       Webcam
 IR LEDS with 850 nm wave length
       Projector
       12v power supply
Continued…

     Computer
     Tracing paper
     Acrylic Sheet
     Mirror
SOFTWARE
The software that we used for hardware interfacing is an open source
software that is Community core Vision version 1.4.

For the hardware to work properly in windows 7 we had to install
multi touch drivers for windows 7
For running flash applications on our hardware we used Adobe
Shockwave and Flash player.
Cost and Scope Analysis

Item name Quantity Price (in PKR)
WebCam 01 2500
Acrylic sheet 01 2500
Infrared LEDS 170 3500
Table 01 3000
Camera Roll 01 120
Tracing paper 01 230
Buffer 01 120
Wire connector 01 150

Mirror 01 200
Soldering Iron 01 200
Soldering wire 01 60
Total 12580
Scope Analysis

• The Scope analysis encompasses the
  different application areas of our
  project.
• Some of them are stated below
 Restaurants
 Academic institutions
 Shopping malls
 Hotels
 Banks , Hospitals and Franchises
 Offices, Meetings ETC…..
Conclusion

• Surface computing in academia provides more
  advantages over traditional computing
• It provides multiuser and multi touch
environment for all the users, which are its key
features and provides it the wow effect
• The economical model that we have proposed
and developed if implemented it could be very
much useful in different application areas
  pertaining to academia
