INTRODUCTION
 A surface computer is a computer that interacts with the
user through the surface of an ordinary objects, rather than
a monitor and keyboard.
 Two examples are there:
SURFACE
COMPUTING
SURFACE TABLE
TOP
PERCEPTIVE
PIXEL
 Surface table top :is a 30 inch in a table from factor; surface can
simultaneously recognize dozens and dozens of movement.
 Perceptive pixel: is company launched by Professor JEFFERSON
HAN. Perceptive pixel builds six-figure plus custom multi touch
drafting tables and enormous interactive wall displays for large
co-operations and military situation rooms.
2003 2004 2005 20072001
In 2001, Stevie Bathiche of
Microsoft Hardware and
Andy Wilson of Microsoft
Research began
brainstorming concepts for
an interactive table. Their
vision was to mix the
physical and virtual worlds
to provide a rich,
interactive experience.
Microsoft Surface Computing
2001 2004 2005 20072003
In early 2003, the team
presented the idea to Bill
Gates, Microsoft
Chairman, and within
the month the first
prototype was born,
based on an IKEA table
with a table cut through
its top and a sheet of
architect vellum as a
diffuser.
2001 2005 20072003 2004
In 2004, the team grew and
became the Surface
Computing group. Surface
prototypes, functionality
and applications were
continuously refined. The
team built more than 85
early prototypes for use by
software developers,
hardware developers and
user researchers.
2001 2003 2004 2005 2007
Today, Microsoft Surface is
a 30-inch diagonal display
table that is easy for
individual or small groups
to use collaboratively. With
a sleek, translucent surface,
people engage with Surface
using natural hand
gestures, touch and
physical objects placed on
the surface.
WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE?
What makes it unique?
Multi-Touch:
Multi-User:
Object Recognition:
Direct Interaction:
Direct interaction means
that, we can interact with
the Surface by using our
fingers.
No other input device is
needed to give input.
This provides a natural
interface effect.
Ordinary touch screens
provide only single
touch sensing.
In surface more than one
touch can be recognized
at the same time.
A single touch screen can
support more than one
user.
Each user can
interact
independently
with the surface.
Object recognition is
done in the surface by
using special bar codes
called Domino tags.
These are infrared
sensitive patterns which
are read by the infrared
sensing cameras inside
the surface.
STRUCTURE AND WORKING OF SURFACE COMPUTER
SCREEN
CAMERA & CPU
INFRARED EMITTER
PROJECTOR
APPLICATIONS
1) Digital photo with finger:
• Photos are arranged into albums that look like files.
• Surface can detect many touches at the same time, multiple people
can sort and resize pictures.
2) Instantly compare while shopping:
We can directly compare different products just by placing them
on the surface. This is done using object recognition technology.
For example two cell phones placed on the surface.
APPLICATIONS
3) Interaction with digital images:
Digital images are manipulated, shared and send via
technologies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.
4) Surface restaurant:
Orders can be placed
on the Surface from a sliding
menu by choosing a category and
scrolling from left to right through the
available options. Items can be dragged into a Central Ordering
Area and a single tap on the list out to the waiter.
ADVANTAGES OF SURFACE COMPUTER.
 We can direct interact with the computer without using mouse and keyboard.
 Multiple user can interact at the same time.
 Any physical object can be directly recognized.
 Microsoft Surface Computer responds to many points of contact simultaneously.
 Wireless communication between two objects is possible.
 No wires or USB ports is required.
 Instant download/upload of photos.
 Users have more control of technology i.e. Ordering food or manipulating photos
fast.
 Time saving by eliminating more processes.
DISADVANTAGES OF SURFACE COMPUTER.
 Not portable and incredibly expensive to
own ($ 12.000-$15.000).
 Need for dim lighting to avoid washing
out the screen.
 Barcode required for an objects.
 Loss of privacy; open for many to view.
 Fat fingers are not accurate as a mouse
or stylus.
 Objects needs to be tagged.
FUTURE SCOPE.
 Future goals are to surround people with
intelligent surfaces-look up recipes on kitchen
counter or table, control TV with coffee table, etc.
 surface computing will be in any number of
environments like schools, businesses, homes and in
any number of form factors
CONCLUSION.
Microsoft Surface is the future of computers.
 Surface Computing brings to life a whole new way
to interact with information that engages the senses,
improves collaboration and empowers consumers.
