Surface computing is a new type of computer that allows for natural interaction through touch and gestures rather than traditional mouse and keyboard inputs. It features a large horizontal multi-touch screen that can recognize objects placed on it and support multiple simultaneous users. The Microsoft Surface was the first commercial surface computing product, conceptualized in 2001 and released in 2007, featuring a multi-touch screen, object recognition capabilities, and ability for direct interaction without peripheral devices. While expensive and not portable, surface computing provides an intuitive interface for data manipulation and collaboration between users.

- 6. What is surface computing? A form of computing that offers “a natural way of interacting with information” rather than the “traditional user interface.”

History 0f Surface Computing • 2001: The product idea for Surface was initially conceptualized by Steven Bathiche . • 2003:1st prototype (t1 ) was produced to bill gets for approval. • 2004: Microsoft built more than 85 early prototypes for Surface. • 2005: The final hardware design was completed. • 2007: Interactive table top device was designed than seamlessly bring both the physical and virtual words into one.

- 9. Direct Interaction : User can “grab ” the digital information with the hands, interacting with a content by touch and gesture. Without the use of mouse & keyboard.
- 10. Multiuser: Surface has 360 degree user interface & 30 inch reflective surface so people can orient themselves on different sides of the surface to interact with an application simultaneously.
- 11. Multi-Touch: Multi-touch contact refers to the ability to have multiple contact points with an interface, unlike with a mouse, where there is only one cursor.
- 12. Object recognition Object recognition refers to the device's ability to recognize the presence and orientation of tagged objects placed on top of it.
- 13. Hardware Specification 1. Screen:- A large horizontal “ Multi-touch ” screen, The Surface can recognize objects by reading coded “domino” tags. 2. Infrared:- Surface uses a 850-nm light source. 3. CPU:- Core2Duo processors 2GB of RAM 256MB graphics card. 4. Projector:- The Surface uses DLP light engine found in many rear projection HDTV's. 13

ADVANTAGES • Large surface area to view different windows and applications. • Data Manipulation - Selecting, moving, rotating and resizing. • Quick and easy to use. • More Than One User –several people can interact • Objects Recognition - Increased functionality aiding user in speed and ease of use.
