CONTENTS
 Introduction
 History
 Why AI?
 Approaches
 Applications
 Future of AI
 Conclusion
Introduction
 The term artificial intelligence was first coined in 1956, at
the Dartmouth conference.
 Artificial intelligence (AI), also machine intelligence(MI)
is intelligence demonstrated by machines.
 AI is the theory and development of computer systems able
to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence,
such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-
making, and translation between languages.
 From its birth 6 decades ago, there have been a variety of
AI programs, and they have impacted other technological
advancements.
History
 In 1950,Alan Turing published a paper that “ If a machine could carry on
a conversation (over a teletype) that was indistinguishable from a
conversation with a human being, then the machine could be called
"intelligent“. The Turing Test was the first serious proposal in the
philosophy of artificial intelligence.
 In late 1955, Newell and Simon developed The Logic Theorist, considered
by many to be the first AI program. The program, representing each
problem as a tree model, would attempt to solve it by selecting the branch
that would most likely result in the correct conclusion.
 In 1956 John McCarthy regarded as the father of AI, organized a
conference for "The Dartmouth summer research project on artificial
intelligence."
Why AI?
"AI can have two purposes. One is to use the power of computers to
augment human thinking, just as we use motors to augment human or
horse power. Robotics and expert systems are major branches of that.
The other is to use a computer's artificial intelligence to understand
how humans think. In a humanoid way. If you test your programs not
merely by what they can accomplish, but how they accomplish it, they
you're really doing cognitive science; you're using AI to understand the
human mind.“
- Herbert Simon
(Founding father of AI Research Project)
Approaches
AI research is divided into three approaches:-
1. Computational psychology is used to make
computer programs that mimic human behavior.
2. Computational philosophy is used to develop an
adaptive, free-flowing computer mind.
3. Computer science serves the goal of creating
computers that can perform tasks that only people
could previously accomplish.
Together, the behavior, mind, and actions make up
artificial intelligence.
Applications
 Apple’s Siri
 Google Assistant
 Microsoft Cortana
 Amazon’s Alexa
 IBM’s Watson
 Wipro’s Holmes
Smart Car
 Speech recognition
 Up-to-date information about historical
landmarks and points of interest on the car’s
rout.
 Lowest price gas stations close to the current
position of the car.
 Warns drivers of road hazards
Robotics
 Robotics continue to evolve from manufacturing,
medicine and remote exploration to entertainment,
security and personal assistance.
 Robots may be one of the most well known examples of
Artificial Intelligence.
 Japan has announced that they will send the first
humanoid robots to the moon.
Video Games
 Video game artificial intelligence is a programming area that tries to make
the computer act in a similar way to human intelligence.
 A rule based system is used whereby information and rules are entered into
a database, and when the video game AI is faced with a situation, it finds
appropriate information and acts accordingly.
 In 2001 the game Halo featured A.I. that could use vehicles and team
tactics. The AI could recognize threats such as grenades and incoming
vehicles.
Health Care
 Microsoft has developed AI ‘Hanover’ to help doctors find
the right treatments for cancer.
 Doctors are using artificial intelligence to try and monitor
multiple high-risk patients, and this is done by asking each
patient numerous questions based on data acquired from
live doctor to patient interactions
Future of AI
1. Automated Transportation.
2. Cyborg Technology.
3. Taking over dangerous jobs.
4. Solving climate change.
5. Robot as friends.
6. Improved elder care.
Conclusion
In it’s short existence, AI has increased understanding of
the nature of intelligence and provided an impressive array
of application in a wide range of areas. It has sharpened
understanding of human reasoning, and of the nature of
intelligence in general. At the same time, it has revealed
the complexity of modeling human reasoning providing
new areas and rich challenges for the future.
