What, Why and How – well WHY anyway At the get go, I had a problem, I teach one class of yr 12 Engineering, - not a great class to do any online work with (trust me). I could have gone into someone else's class, but time and tides were against me. The main focus of my job is working with staff and developing their IT skills. After discussion with Derek, it was decided that a “thing” for and with staff would be acceptable and useful.
Now the WHAT  What was my “thing” for staff going to be? I looked at blogs I looked at wikis I looked at video conferencing I decided a wiki was achievable and of value
And WHY??? Well – they looked useful Roger’s Innovation Decision Process theory states that: innovation diffusion is a process that occurs over time through five stages: Knowledge, Persuasion, Decision, Implementation and Confirmation.  This means that a person  first knows about an innovation, then forms an attitude toward the innovation, decides to adopt or reject the innovation, implements the new idea (or not), and later confirms their decision. (Rogers, 2003, p. 161)  I felt lots of staff had no idea about wiki’s or how they could be used soooooooo lets give them an experience, backed up with some information, in a friendly non threatening environment and in a supportive way.
Did it Work? Do pigs fly? Sort of and for some I learnt a lot 36 staff became members 5 or 6 actually posted or contributed But no not really, not the way I wanted
Why not? Exams  Reports  Holidays No real reason No real tuition time No motivation to participate “ Motivation to learn is strongly dependent on the learner’s confidence in his or her potential for learning. (Von Glasersfeld 1989) (Brownstein 2001).” A high level of fear and trepidation about things IT and the internet, and I don’t mean mine
Where to from here? Many staff have a very limited experience in using IT, let alone using it as a teaching tool. Being able to plug their laptops into a data projector and show a power point is a huge confidence boost.  Being asked and encouraged to look at wiki spaces and consider using one, while they are in their classrooms and alone is probably one step too far for some, and a whole journey too far for many.  So what can I do, what is within my locus of control? I can provide greater support and instruction for staff. I could work with a department during departmental meeting times, to set up and use a wiki.  I can choose a department, PED stands out, and work with them. Doing this will up skill the PED department and will provide a beacon to other departments.
Why PED? The PED department is worth working with because there were two staff from that department who were motivated to engage with the wiki and actually post to the wiki, edit links and contribute. The department is already using IT wherever it can, so it is ready to move.  We think we can use a wiki space inside the health classes, and do some interesting stuff (teaching or something). I can assist the department by making myself available to work with their classes, so the teachers can be confident that any technical details or student knowledge deficit can be dealt with.
To sum up This is a horrible presentation, but I don’t do pictures I learnt a lot I have laid a foundation which is worth building on It wasn’t much of a global classroom project because there was not much engagement or globalness about it  I learnt a lot
