Newspaper Tower Challenge
We were gave 5 minutes to discuss how to build a tower (using
verbal discussion), not being allowed touch the materials to
show plans, then we had 15 minutes to build the tower (non
verbal communication only), we had four (4) newspaper rolls as
the base and two (2) newspaper rolls for the tower. Then we had
1 minute for the towers to last, we were the tallest by at least
10cm for the time we were given but the tower fell down shortly
after and the next team won.
It was difficult as we couldn’t show what we wanted to do in the
discussion stage or speak during the construction phase, both
verbal and non verbal are essential for success.
Good Group Communication Skills
 Good group communication includes:
 Speaking the same language.
 Speaking clearly.
 Explaining plans/ideas clearly.
 Use descriptive words that are not too complicated for lesser
minds.
 Take turns and let everyone contribute.
Consequences of poor communication skills
 Nobody knows what’s going on.
 People won’t co-operate.
 Work will descend into the “typical group project” (one does
all work, one pops in now and again and the other disappears
until the end of the project).
 The project falls apart.
Discussion Guide:
 Environment
 Not too noisy
 People can bare being there for the duration of the discussion
 Supporting Resources
 More resources means more informative discussions
 People get more information
Discussion Ground Rules Resources:
 Agenda
 People know what you are discussing for/against.
 People understand the topic.
 Gives the discussion reason.
 Time
 Should be long enough to cover everything, but short enough
that people get bored/uncomfortable.
Discussion Ground Rules:
 No racism.
 No bigotry.
 No religious BS.
 No stupid questions.
 No interrupting.
 One speaker at a time.
 Let everyone contribute.
 Stay on topic.
 Don’t be too annoying.
 Stay awake.
Interacting with others: The Soler theory
 Soler theory is how non verbal communication can improve your
verbal communication
 S: Square. Face squarely with person you talk to so you show you
are involved.
 O: Open. Remain open posture (not arms crossed) so you don’t look
defensive.
 L: Lean. Lean forwards for interest not backwards for lack of
interest.
 E: Eye. Keep good eye contact.
 R:Relaxed. Don’t look too nervous.
Social Media Group Debate
 1. You must decide upon an opening statement. This
should state your opinion, position and the arguments you
will be proposing.
 E.g. Censorship is wrong because everyone has the right to
free speech.
 Openning statement:
 Social media is good because it helps with the economy.
Questioning Your Opponent
2. You should have at least 10 questions that can be asked of your opponent.
These should be on separate sheets of paper or on note cards for easy reference.
The questions should be specifically directed to your opponent and should be
concise and clear.
Answering Debate Questions
3. You should have answers prepared which will be used to respond to your
opponent’s questions. Imagine that you are from the other team and determine
what questions may be asked of your team.
Conclusion
 4. You should have a final conclusive argument/statement drawn
up which will be proposed at the end of your debate.
 When you have determined who will be responsible for each
portion of your team's debate, it is up to you to prepare yourself for
the challenge that lies ahead. Only one team will win this debate.
The winning team will: Have a solid background regarding all
material. Have plenty of evidence to back up claims. Be
creative/psyche out opponents. Outclass opponents/never give an
answer of "uh...."
