Sustainable Development in the context of Climate Change
Research at AIT has been consolidated under thrust area with creation
of a center of excellence on “Sustainable Development in the Context of
Climate Change” (SDCC)
Sustainable Development in the context of
Climate Change
Based on :
 Considerable experience in the region
 Working in the area of sustainable development for more
than three decades
 Consolidating this research for Climate Change under
broader umbrella of Sustainable Development to create niche
for ourselves.
 A core critical mass of faculty and staff strength in the
thematic area.
 Endorsed by various donor agencies and stakeholders
10
Broad Climate Change areas at AIT
 Climate Science – study of vulnerable areas
using GIS and RS, disaster preparedness, air quality
monitoring and modeling, etc.
 Adaptation – e.g.. major problems in the coastal
areas and islands as well as in agriculture
production of Asia, urban, rural and coastal areas,
etc.
 Mitigation – renewable energy and carbon
neutral economies, etc.
11
AIT-Research strategy (2012-2016)
 Overall objective: “To significantly increase, by 2016, AIT’s
contribution towards sustainable development of Asia and
beyond through participatory research in relation to climate
change, and, implementation of applications to address real life
challenges and fill knowledge gaps”.
 Strategic principles:The four Strategic principles of the AIT
Research Strategy (2012-2016) are :
