THE FUTURE...?
www.abebooks.com
It is very difficult to
predict the future.
It’s difficult to even
predict what will
happen in the next
year.

HOW DOES A 21ST CENTURY STUDENT
LEARN?
Here’s a problem

PLEs are not only personal
web tools and personal
learning networks. PLEs
are much wider than
this, taking in experiences
and realia, as well as
learning through
TV, music, paper based
materials, radio & more
formal contexts.
Learning content is not as
important now as where (or
who) to connect to, to find
it.
PWTs are any web
tools, (usually Web 2.0)
chosen by learners to
support their lifelong
learning.

Web 2.0:
"A perceived second-generation of Web-
based services such as social networking
sites, wikis, communication tools, and
folksonomies that emphasize online
collaboration and sharing among users"

We don't.
By embracing a Web 2.0 approach to learning
objects, we can allow academic staff to
support learners on a much more individual
basis through new communication channels.

LEARNING SPACES
Social bookmarking is a method for Internet
users to store, organize, search, and manage
bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the
help of metadata (tags).
Folksonomy (from folk + taxonomy) is the
practice and method of collaboratively creating
and managing tags to annotate and categorize
content.

PLES ARE NOT ANOTHER
SUBSTANTIATION OF
EDUCATIONAL
TECHNOLOGY BUT A NEW
APPROACH TO LEARNING
PLE ARE BASED ON THE IDEA
THAT LEARNING WILL TAKE
PLACE IN DIFFERENT
CONTEXTS AND SITUATIONS
AND WILL NOT BE PROVIDED
BY A SINGLE LEARNING
PROVIDER
THE ‘PEDAGOGY’ BEHIND THE PLE – IF IT COULD
BE STILL CALLED THAT – IS THAT IT OFFERS A
PORTAL TO THE WORLD, THROUGH WHICH
LEARNERS CAN EXPLORE AND
CREATE, ACCORDING TO THEIR OWN
INTERESTS AND DIRECTIONS, INTERACTING AT
ALL TIMES WITH THEIR FRIENDS AND
COMMUNITY
Aim
To analyze the experience
gained in using of Web 2.0
environment for competence
development and for
professional network
organizing
Social network sites can be defined as web-based
services that allow individuals to:
(1)construct a public or semi-public profile within a
bounded system
(2)articulate a list of other users with whom they
share a connection
(3)view and traverse their list of connections and
those made by others within the system.

Social-oriented applications and
professional networks - new
opportunities for learners and
educators
Social Networks
PLEs building laid the foundations of
some main ideas:
(1)learning is an ongoing process
and tools to support this learning
are needed
(2)the role of the individual in self-
organizing learning is important
(3)learning can take place in
different contexts and situations
and cannot be provided by a
single learning provider.

Personal Learning Environment
PLEs are systems that help learners take
control of and manage their own learning.
This includes providing support for learners
to set their own learning goals, manage
their learning;
managing both content and process;
communicate with others in the process of
learning and thereby achieve learning
goals.

Web 2.0 applications called “start
pages” are designed to provide a
personalized place on the internet
where users can mashup
data, information and knowledge

anywhere, anytime, including
mobile login.

CONCLUSION
• The modified Rogers’ model for competence development lifecycle
in a learning network is used in order to be examined the main
phases in competence progress of each student
• Social networks contribute to the processes by which learners meet
and communicate, and pool, share, learn about and reuse their
resources, knowledge and competencies
• PLE building is found to be a core for PLN and PfLN deployment
• The transition from PLE to PfLN is an important step that supports
students to become self-organized and life-long learners
