INTRODUCTION
WORK STUDY:-
 Motion study
 Time study:-
o A qualified, well trained operator
o Normal pace
o Doing a specific task
OBJECTIVES OF TIME STUDY
• To increase productivity
 To set labour standard for satisfactory performance.
 To determine basic times/normal times.
 To determine the number of machines an operator can
handle.
 To determine standards costs.
Advantages
To develop suitable working conditions
To improve utilization of resources
To reduce human effort by proper design of
processes
TIME STUDY MOTION STUDY
 Notes the time involved
in carrying out each
element of operation.
 Aims at fixing the
standard time for
carrying out a job.
 Is not suitable for
workers where quality is
prime consideration
 Study of motions on an
operation
 To reduce wastage of
time
 Suitable for all types of
jobs.
Diff between time & motion study
TIME STUDY
Types of elements involved in a job
 Repetitive element:- Occurs in every work cycle of the job.
 Occasional element:- Occurs at intervals.
 Constant element:- Basic or normal time remains constant.
 Variable element:- Basic or normal time varies.
 Manual element:- Performed manually.
 Governing element :- Occupies a longer time than any other
element.
TIME STUDY
Methods
 1.Predetermined time standard system
 2.Stop watch reading
a) Continuous
b) Snap-back
 3.Work sampling

E=error
n=sample size
Que. A preliminary study indicates that the proportion of
idle time of a machine is 30% ; rest of the time it is
working . To get a good estimate of the idle time with a
precision of ±1% , then what should be the sample size?
n=

Applications
 In decision making
 Provides accuracy
 Organisation and method
