  • #3: We all know from experience and anecdotes that conventional education system does not suit every child. In earlier days children not interested in points race could learn some sort of trade and did get by. However, nowadays, even learning a trade requires a minimum qualification. And most students are pushed towards a third level education due to scarcity in job market. We can not assume that all first year s are created equal .
  • #5: Students are used to gathering information in different forms – social interaction being one of the main ones. This is the age of Facebook and Twitter. And then they have the panacea of all problems – the Google search! When they arrive at the University, they are thrust into the semesterisation and essays and credits every 3 months. Then they are told not to copy and paste from the internet. All the learnt behaviour is turned on its head – to be unlearned and to learn new skills, like referencing styles!
  • #6: Students in school may think they are quite tech savvy and know almost everything, but the transition from second level to third level provides a huge shift in perspective for 1st year students. They may feel totally lost and the sheer size of a college is visually intimidating too.
  • #8: They start gathering information the usual way, networking with other students, taking books out of the library and trying to make sense of it ; and mostly being unaware of what the library can offer. Do they know whether they are gathering the right kind of information? Is there too much information? Which one to select? Which one is relevant? How does Google know which one is relevant?
  • #9: Eventually they follow their peers and find the Library. By nature, libraries are quite intimidating – big building/s ,lots of books, and no one is allowed to have a convivial conversation!!
  • #10: This is Boole Library in UCC main campus. We have a satellite Nursing & Health Sciences Library in Brookfield nearby and a Clinical Library in CUH. Marketing the library to 1st year students. How do we do that? From the very beginning UCC Library was involved in marketing the Library to First year Students during the orientation process – offering stand-alone Library tours and talking about how the Library works, how to look up something in the catalogue etc. And every year the organising committee expressed dissatisfaction with the format of the tour. As a result, in 2011, Virginia, I need help here. Tour changed format.
  • #12: However, the library provides Information Literacy units to First year students as a stand-alone programme. 2011 – 2013 > module delivered in the library to emphasise the relevance of the library in teaching and learning. Workshops aimed at first years.
  • #16: Like everybody students need to bond. College . Registration>orientation provides that opportunity> check out the gaff – so to say. Orientation and Registration – First year Experience – committee – Library included. Brief History on Introductory Library Tour. Provided stand-alone tour of the library first> change of format and evolution over the years>now work closely with the UCC First Year Experience group regarding physical tour of the library> ambassadors specific to the library and trained by us do the tours. Again, Virginia, I need help here.
  • #20: The Library is the missing link and contributes to ensuring that the student experience is more holistic.
  • #21: Short note on what it was and how it evolved. Not saying that we should interbreed like these spiders, but we should have a close collaboration and buy-in from wider university community to make the students’ first year experience a memorable one…
