Editor's Notes

  • #2: Dia daoibh a chairde. Is mise Jenny Collery as an Leabharlann, Coláiste Ollscoile, Baile Átha Cliath. Ba mhaite liom thuair bhoicháis libh chun on seans a leabhar innui faoi teagaisc “Bradaíl - Seachain í thar aon rud eile!” Hello, I am Jenny Collery, I am a College Liaison Library from UCD Library and I would like to thank you for the opportunity to speak today about the development of the Irish language Avoiding Plagiarism Tutorial.
  • #3: When talking to UCD College of Arts & Celtic Studies Teaching & Learning Board about the development of our eLearning objects the UCD School of Irish, Celtic Studies, Irish Folklore & Linguistics was immediately interested plagiarism and of finding books. Wonderful reaction, and immediately agreed to work on this.
  • #4: As lead on Plagiarism, Referencing and Citation education at the Library and as part of our eLearning team I created a new Avoiding Plagiarism Tutorial using the IT Tallaght Tutorial “Avoiding Plagiarism”. This is the English Language version that was shown to the Teaching & Learning Committee that they were so keen to have made available in Irish. It is adapted from the ITT Tutlorial with a change in content, assessments and interactions. It also plays on mobile and tablet devices. Five complimentary tutorials were also developed on Referencing and Citation for Harvard, MLA, Vancouver, APA, and Chicago styles by my colleagues Sonya Hood and Diarmuid Stokes
  • #5: Bord na Gaeilge, UCD Initially going to ask a Library based staff member with fluent Irish, Sue Daly. But due to illness and after consultations with Bord na Gaeilge, UCD it was recommended we use a professional translation service
  • #6: Process of translation
  • #7: Working with Ian was so easy. Bord na Gaeilge were happy this his had the appropriate Munster Irish and he has worked in both TV and radio doing voice-overs in Irish. This meant recording took only 2.5 to 3 hours, with very little breaks or re-recording required. I did the editing as we went along, to ensure he didn’t have to come back in a second time.
  • #8: We ended up with a very professional and easy to listen to tutorial, that had been proofed twice, sending back from BnG and then when Ian and I recorded it together.
  • #9: Basic questions I asked Clár: What is best practice in providing Irish Language Resources? How does the tutorial produced live up to that? Timing Equal Access Equal Quality Publicity End Result
  • #10: Best practice dictates that Irish and English language resources are promoted and produced simultaneously so that Irish Language Speakers are familiar from the beginning with the Irish Language Version. Although the English Language version was produced first, the Irish tutorial produced met this requirement in terms of simultaneous promotion. The majority of our promotional work happened together. The English Language version was produced first though.
  • #11: Accessibility Equality in standard and accessibility across language resources Design, Font, Size and Colour identical in line with Office Languages Act (2003) Online Versions accessible side-by-side
  • #12: Equal Quality Inferior quality resources will not be used by Irish Language users. They will just resort to the English versions. Bord na Gaeilge were very keen on this point that translation and narration be completed professionally. The Bord was able to provide this service with the full translation and the “actor”, Ian Ó Caoimh. When recording and before, Ian was able to make any suggested changes to the script. But, had UCD Library had to fund it internally, it may not have been so speedily done or at all. When negotiating the translation services with the Bord I was advised that according to the Act resources of relevance to the public in general should be provided in both languages, those on closed access systems or to select audiences are more at the digression of the institution. They are also keen that resources, already in existence, be used across institutions.

  • #16: Máirtín Coilfer (UCD School of Irish etc.) embedded the online tutorial into a new, innovative first year module on academic writing and online dictionaries. The tutorial is completed at in a BYOD fashion at the beginning of to sessions on academic writing in Irish. Students not to writing academically in Irish. After the quiz Máirtín asks students to take part in a quiz in class. So successful that he is keen that we look at developing other Irish language tutorials on a similar vein.
  • #17: Compares well against our other popular tutorials such as Google Scholar (vt 5.66), Critical Thinking (6.65), English Language Tutorial (5.1 mins)
