- 2. What is a Crusade? It’s a series of holy wars against Islam led by power-mad popes and fought by religious fanatics. The crusades to the East were in every way defensive wars. They attempted to turn back or defend against Muslim conquests of the land of the Christians.
- 3. Description over the Fourth Crusade • Why did it begin: This crusade was to follow a new strategy than the rest: strike at Egypt, the base of Muslim power. Unfortunately, it never reached its goal. • Who fought: The knights, (crusades) and venetians fought the Muslims • Where did it take place: I think this may have taken place in Arab and Turk, Africa. (1201-1204) • What were the effects of the crusade: The crusade never finished their job. They at first were planning on supporting the Constantinople who promised great rewards. Then when it came time for the crusades to receive the rewards, the Constantinople couldn’t afford them. That made the Crusaders mad so they attacked, captured, and brutally sacked Constantinople, the greatest Christian in the world. Because they did this, the Pope Innocent III told the Crusaders that he strongly disagreed with what they had done.
- 4. How Did It End? • After all this happened in 1204, the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox drove far apart from each other. Even till this day the Pope could never fix this, because they hated each other so bad.
- 5. Did Another Crusade Follow This? • Yes, in fact another Crusade did end up following this. (1217-1221) • What: This Crusade is The Fifth Crusade who did a little better than the fourth one. • Why: This crusade ended up capturing Damietta in Egypt, but the Muslims eventually defeated the army and reoccupied the city.
