The Crusades were a series of military expeditions launched by European Christians to recapture the Holy Land from Muslim rule. Jerusalem was a holy city for Christians, Muslims, and Jews, and around 1095 a new group of Arabs took control of Jerusalem and closed it to Christian and Jewish pilgrims. In response, Pope Urban II called for a Crusade to help the Byzantine Empire against invading Muslim Turks and promised forgiveness of sins for those who died fighting. The goal of the Crusades was to recover Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim rule, though the Crusaders were ultimately unsuccessful and were pushed out by the 13th century.
