Solution Relationship
Learning Objectives
In this lesson you will learn to:
 identify cause and effect and problem-solution relationships in
sentences;
 match a cause clause with its effect clause and a problem clause
with its solution clause; and
 use compound sentences to show cause and effect and problem-
solution relationships
Ben walked to school with his sister Amy. She looked in her
bag and didn’t see her lunch. She asked Ben to go back home.
Ben said, “Don’t worry. Mom put both of our lunches in my
bag.” Amy felt relieved and thanked Ben.
LET’S FIND THE PROBLEM AND SOLUTION Who has the
problem? Amy What is her problem? She doesn’t have her
lunch in her bag. What is the solution to her problem? Her
brother Ben told her that he got their lunches.
• It’s Saturday. Becky and Sarah went to the park to play.
When they arrived, they saw that one of the swings was
occupied so there’s only one swing left. They both want to
use it.

2.6. LET’S FIND THE PROBLEM AND SOLUTION What is the
problem? What is the solution to the problem? Sarah let
Becky play with the swing first. There is only one swing left
and they both want to use it.

• for an idea. She suggested he
• take the ribbon his dog won
• at the pet parade.
• Emily knew she had to
• get to school on time, but
• her mother said she couldn’t
• drive her. Emily decided
• to leave early and walk to
• school.
• Mrs. Anderson wanted a
• fresh pineapple for her cake.
• The store near her did not
• have any fresh ones, so she
• went to another store and
• bought it there.
• Robert was afraid the
• flooding river would reach
• his home. His parents were
• away, and he was watching
• with his little sister. He
• saddled his horse, and he
• and his sister rode to the top
• of the hill.
