Information Package Please Return Tomorrow Behavior Contract (Signed by parent after reading the CHAMPS plan.) Lab Safety Contract Consent to display photos and schoolwork. Student enrollment packet (if not already done)

Supplies Due by Friday 2 – 4x6 index cards 1 – ream white copy paper 1 box ziplock bags 1 package large construction paper 2 rolls paper towels 2 Boxes Kleenex 2 Spiral notebooks Notebook and paper Several pencils – no pen used in science Personal pencil sharpener with lid Colored pencils & markers (twistable are best) Metric ruler 1 zipper bag to hold this stuff 1 large antibacterial hand sanitizer Throughout the year, we will need random items for really cool labs. They are not very expensive and can usually be found at the $ store. These supplies are very important, so be sure to always bring them when asked.

Conversations Speak in a quiet tone of voice. No conversation while the teacher is speaking. When in learning groups, speak in whispers, if everyone is talking in normal tones, it is too noisy. Only converse about class topics, that’s what your home phone is for – talking to friends.

Help If you require my help, raise your hand and I attend to you as soon as is possible. If I am assisting other students, wait patiently without complaining. If I cannot help you immediately, you may ask a neighbor if they can help you. Please speak quietly.

Activity During class activities, students should remain in their groups without wandering around. Do not leave your seat to get my attention, raise your hand. Follow all instructions given by your teacher. Do not engage in peer conversations during this time.

Movement Please do not wander around the room for no reason. If you need to sharpen your pencil, you may do so without permission, but go and get back in your seat without any drama. The same rule applies for tissue, get it and get back to your seat. If you are moving to groups, do so in an orderly and calm manner. That is not your cue to lose control. Order is important for lab safety, no running in the room.

Participation All students are expected to do their work as assigned. Students are required to do their part in group projects. All students will participate in discussions. All students will treat the equipment with respect! All students are expected to do their best!

Success By following these procedures for class, you as the student will achieve success in this class!

Rubrics How We Grade Clearly shows teacher expectations. Students stay focused on a task. Students know what they must do to get a good grade! Keeps me honest!

Visual Vocabulary Criteria Title is given by the teacher. Must be ready for grading conferences. (On time!) Must be on storyboard paper. (Given by me.) Must be in your own words. (I don’t always understand the textbook definition!) Must have correct picture for word! Title Word Picture Definition Graduated Cylinder a piece of laboratory equipment used to accurately measure the volume of an object. Good Sources: Newspaper/magazines Computer pictures Color hand-drawings Rubric Picture 50% Definition 40% Kept Current 10% Example

Drawings Must be drawn in pencil unless you get special permission. Must be in color. Labels and lines drawn with a ruler. Must explain the purpose of the drawing in 1-3 sentences on an index card. Title, in large print, clearly written and centered. Name and class period written on back. Purpose 30% Statement Neatness 30% Ruled Labels 25% Name & Title 15% Criteria Rubric

Concept Maps Criteria Clear and centered title. Ruler-drawn lines connecting concepts. Map must show a clear understanding of the subject/concept. Concept will be explained on an index card. Rubric Concept Card 50% Ruler-drawn lines 25% Neatness/Organization 25% Trees are important because they provide oxygen and wood. Oxygen is important for life to humans, plants, and animals. Wood is used by humans to make houses, paper and furniture.

Reading Passages Criteria Must have name on paper! Underline the sentence(s) that have the answers. Write the ¶ symbol next to the question number. Correct answers are a MUST! (Few questions) Rubric Grade based on number of questions answered correctly. - 15 for no underlining. - 15 for no ¶ symbols.

Science in the News All Pre-AP Science 7- Bonus Students must bring and share 1 current event that is related to any science topic. It must be from a real news source. Ex. Dallas Morning News, www.msnbc.com , Scientific American , etc. Points given for “weird” science articles. Must be within the past 10 days. Must be mounted in your journal along with a 1 paragraph summary written according to our routine. Criteria Rubric Timeliness 25% Summary 50% In Journal 25%

Sub Procedures *Work on the beginning assignment from the overhead, further instructions will follow. 1. Please be respectful of the substitute teacher at all times, even when you don’t want to. 2. Don’t talk loudly. Usually what causes conflict with subs. 3. Answer appropriately for attendance. 4. Do all work as assigned by me, I’ll try to give you at least 1 day notice. 5. Assignments are numbered
