Rigorous and in-depth Project Based Learning: is organized around an open-ended Driving Question or Challenge.   creates a need to know essential content and skills.   requires inquiry to learn and/or create something new.   requires critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and various forms of communication.   allows some degree of student voice and choice.   incorporates feedback and revision.    results in a publicly presented product or performance.  
Where to start? The Driving Question Create a problem or question that  1.  relates to your theme/unit 2.  forces students to explore, analyze,  and investigate
Question should be Open-ended Provocative Discipline focused  Challenging Connected to real-world dilemmas  Consistent with standards What is the American Dream and who has it? How should a bridge be designed for this sight? What should be the goals of the US foreign policy? Should we be concerned with global warming in our community? How can we use the principles of probability to assess the state lottery system? How can we use Newton’s three laws to create a sport that takes advantage of the unique characteristics of the moon?
Traditional Skill Sets Foundation Skills Basic academic:  reading, writing, speaking, listening, mathematics Thinking:  ability to learn, reason, think creatively, make decisions Personal Quality:  individual responsibility, self-esteem, self-management, sociability, and integrity
Workplace Skills Resources:   using time, money, materials, space equitably Interpersonal skills:   teams, teach, serve, lead, negotiate, solve conflict Information:   acquire and evaluate data, use computers, communicate Systems:   understand social, organizational, & technological systems Technology:   effectively apply technology to tasks, understand & use different applications

Unit/Theme What is your driving question? Entry Event: Introductory lessons, guest speaking, field trip, novel,  discussion, etc. Individual topic choice with relation to unit/theme Continuing lessons as needed keeping connection to unit/theme Research of individual topic with relation to unit/theme Product development showing key elements within unit/theme Presentation of Final Product:  Performance, fair, trip, speech, whole school, small class Debrief of unit/theme Journal, dialog, assessment, survey
