How do we take this blank
canvas and make something of
INTERNET IDENTITY
โ€œBREAKDOWNโ€
โ€ข Three major ways to look at โ€œInternet identityโ€
1. Digital Identity: Data (text, pictures, video,
etc)
2. Online Identity: Data & Behavior
3. Internet Identity: Data Behavior ::
Identity
DIGITAL IDENTITYโ€ข The data that uniquely describes a person or a thing &
contains information about the subject (text, links, photos,
videos, content).
โ€ข A critical problem in cyberspace is knowing with whom one is
interacting โ€” because weโ€™re interacting with data
โ€ข Currently there are no ways to precisely determine the
identity of a person in digital space (data can be
manipulated)
โ€ข Even though there are attributes (data) associated to a
personโ€™s digital identity, these attributes or even identities
can be changed, masked or trashed & new ones created
ONLINE IDENTITY
โ€ข User establishes in online communities & websites.
โ€ข Choice, decisions, reflection, & participation
โ€ข It can also be considered as an actively constructed
presentation of oneself (behavior).
โ€ข Relationship to a certain social group(s) they are a part of
online. Some can even be deceptive about their identity
(but that still โ€œtells usโ€ something about a personโ€™s identity).
โ€ข The combination of data, behavior, association, &
expression
INTERNET IDENTITY
โ€ข Online identity โ€“ personal self-concept as it relates to the
Internet (cf. Identity (social science))
โ€ข Internet = environment
โ€ข How we relate to the environment (physical, social,
emotional)
โ€ข Digital identity โ€“ a culmination of data that uniquely describes a
person or a thing & contains information about the subjectโ€™s
relationships to other entities
โ€ข (Note: the interconnected reliance to above)
KNOWING A
DIGITAL SELFโ€ข The digital environment is a real and influential
space
โ€ข Critically influencing self-concepts | self-
perception
โ€ข Critically influencing relationships | perceptions
ofโ€ฆ
โ€ข Critically influencing ideas, values, & creation
of new knowledge
Step 1) Google Yourself
Developing Your Digital Identity

โ€ข Associations, communities, interactions,
connections (likes, retweets, follows, etc.), etc.
โ€ข Should be able to define your digital and online self
at all times
A TRUE REFLECTION ?
โ€ข Does a digital & online identity accurately
reflect who a person is ?
โ€ข Deleting / withholding content
โ€ข Balance between quantity and quality
โ€ข Balance = congruency
Step 2) Determine your Digital
Identity
What are
your personal
strengths?
What are your
professional
strengths?
Step 2) Determine your Digital
Identity
Personal
Strengths
Professional
Strengths
Look for overlap | Look for congruency

โ€ข Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram
โ€ข Google yourself frequently | memorize your network
โ€ข Aim for congruency in all platforms | environments
STEP 3) REFLECT ON
YOUR IDENTITY
โ€ขWhat do you want to be known for?
โ€ขHow do you want to represent yourself?
โ€ขDo you want to be a generalist or a subject matter
expert?
โ€ขWho do you aspire to be like and why?
โ€ขWhen asked what do you do, can you answer it
concisely?
