DHL Oman partners with Afcons to offer Float On/ Float Off services for Jack up In its 50th year of operations, AFCONS, is a part of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, the third largest construction group in India with a group turnover in excess of Rs 90 billion.AFCONS has a presence in almost the entire spectrum of Infrastructure activities in India and transnationally in the Middle East and Africa. Over the last five decades , AFCONS has emerged as the leader in its business field by continuously delivering its world class services in the areas of Marine Works, Highways, Bridges, Metro Works, Power Houses, Tunnels , Oil & Gas , LNG Tanks and other general Civil Engineering Projects.It is the first Indian construction Company to have constructed an underground metro station (at Barakhamba Road, New Delhi) without a foreign JV and one of only four qualified bidders for construction of Reactor Buildings in the country.With an extensive requirement for reliable logistics solutions in tune with the active projects, Afcons had chosen DHL as its preferred logistics vendor from Oman. Having proved ourselves in providing efficient and effective solutions to Afcons from October 2010, by handling several break bulk, air freight movements, it was but natural for Afcons to turn to DHL for options to demobilise the Barkha and Sohar site equipments, including the 1000mt Jack Up Platform “ Maharaja” & 200mt barge “Sambhavi” and various sizes of shore cranes / booms / fabricated structures etc to Dahej, India.Owing to the time constraints and complexities in dismantling the Platform, Afcons wanted the skid structure to be retained in its entireity, including the upright spuds, at a height of 45meters from ground level.

DHL Oman partners with Afcons to offer Floaton/ Float Off services for Jack up(Contd)After considering the intricacies of moving sensitive equipments, with the Chartering / Legal teams, we closed in on a float on / float off operation for the Jack Up and the barge, and a lift on / lift off operation for the general cargo. After considerable and thorough checks in liason with the client’s engineering, insurance, planning and logistics department, the semi submergible vessel STX Rose was narrowed down upon. Subsequently, the fixture note was signed and the operation commenced in the second week of February, after careful analysis of weather / tidal conditions, in the Steinweg Terminal of Port Sohar. The flo/flo operations was conducted within the break water of Port Sohar under the close supervision of the Port / Customs Authorities and from the Engineering team / MWS team from the client’s ends. The lift on / lift off operation ensued. The entire operation was co ordinated and timed to perfection, to suit the free time as set out by the Fixture Note. The total movement involved 7300 CBM of cargo, of which 4300 CBM was the Flo/ Flo cargo and the remaining break bulk. It is noteworthy, that it was the first movement of such kind that The Port of Sohar has handled and in all probability, the first such move handled by DHL IP MENAT.A dedicated team of 6, including the Sohar Branch Office, handled and co ordinated the various aspects of the movement, under the supervision of the Country Manager , Oman and Local & Regional IP Team.
