Project Loon is a Google initiative to provide internet access to rural and remote areas using high-altitude balloons. Balloons float in the stratosphere twice as high as airplanes, carried by wind currents. They are equipped with communication antennas to connect to each other and transmit internet signals to antennas on the ground. This allows people's devices to connect and bounce signals between balloons until reaching an internet connection back on Earth. The goal is to use this network of balloons to expand internet access to more of the world's population, especially the estimated 50% without access, primarily in developing areas.
