Evaluation Question 2
How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
Gender
Gender
The male character in our thriller opening is represented as a typical male in a thriller
film, as aggressive and dominant , shown when he is shouting at the female character.
The female character in the opening is also represented as the female in a typical thriller
as she has a passive role shown by the lack of dialogue from her and she is hardly ever in
shot. She is also represented as being a victim and scared but this is also questioned
throughout.
Villains in thriller films are usually represented as male, however we cause our thriller to
question this as the ending of our thriller shows the girl with blood on her hands
suggesting she could have been the villain.
This thriller also represents the two genders as incompatible in this case, where their
relationship is clearly shown as broken.
Age
Age
In the thriller opening both the characters are teenagers, so the opening overall is
representing teenagers.
The arguing and running away scenes represent teenagers as reckless and
mentally/emotionally stable, which tends to be a stereotypical representation of teenagers
throughout media in general so the opening goes along with this representation.
A similar representation would be in the TV series ‘Skins’ where teenagers display lots of
reckless behaviour and arguments. Usually as
a result of drug abuse.
Disability
Disability
Due to the nature of the thriller opening where the female possibly witnesses a violent
death (Caused by herself, possibly by accident) the use of flashbacks alongside the event
creates a possible representation of PTSD – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Flashbacks are
a real life symptom of PTSD and so is an accurate representation.
