able to take care of them by using the right tools. Using the appropriate tools will help to
prolong the life span of a device, and it will also help in keeping a safe work
environment. In this module, you will learn about the different hand tools used in
Computer Systems Servicing.

Let’s now proceed with the lesson! The following section will provide you with a
brief discussion of the lesson. This will help you discover and understand new
concepts and skills in identifying different types of hand tools and their uses. As you go
along with this module, you will learn which tool is appropriate for a given task. Let’s do
this!
PLANNING AND PREPARING FOR TASK TO BE UNDERTAKEN
Planning involves deciding beforehand, what is to be done, when is it to be done,
how it is to be done and who is going to do it. Planning is also directed at resolving specific
problem issues or conflicts.
Preparing for a particular task to be undertaken includes proper tool
selection. The following are the tips and ways in proper tool selection:
a. Know and understand in detail the scope of work to be accomplished and plan
for the scope considering the sequence of tasks.
b. Selecting the best tool for each task requires training in the proper use of the
tools, field experience in their safe use, and following the manufacturer’s
guidance and instructions for that specific tool.
c. When obtaining the tool all the associate tooling and consumable parts, as
recommended by the manufacturer, must be included. In addition, related
consumable parts must also be selected and used according to their
manufacturer’s instructions.
SAFE USE OF TOOLS
Use the tool for the purpose for which it was designed. Not all tools
come with detailed instructions, but there are those that do spell out the safety
―Do’s and Don’ts for your safety. If there are set- up/use options, operator judgment
must always be based on what is the safest way to use the tool.
To complete hardware repairs, it is important to have a toolkit that should
contain all of the necessary tools. As you gain experience, you will learn which tools
to have available for different types of jobs.
HARDWARE TOOLS
Computer Systems Servicing involves many tools. All of each have their purpose
and classifications. These tools can be classified into four categories: Electro-Static
Discharge (ESD) tools, Hand Tools, Cleaning Tools, and Diagnostic Tools.
Electro-Static Discharge Tools
A human body can store electricity. When our body comes in contact with
other electronic components, it can cause damage. An instance of electro-static
discharge may not cause harm to the computer. When it is done repeatedly, it may cause
damage. To prevent this from happening to a computer, ESD tools are used. The
following are computer ESD tools:

• The antistatic wrist strap is a tool that is worn around
the wrist and the other end, an alligator clip, is clipped
to the metal surface of the computer. This protects
computer equipment when ground to a computer
chassis.
• An antistatic mat is a mat that protects a
computer by preventing static electricity from
building up. The computer hardware
components are simply placed on top of the mat to
prevent electricity from accumulating and
damaging the computer.

Hand tools are commonly used in computer assembly and disassembly. These
hand tools usually come in small sizes. Sometimes, they also come as a set or
toolkit. The following are the most common hand tools used in Computer
Systems Servicing:
• A flat-head screwdriver is used to tighten or loosen screws with
negative slotted heads.
• A Phillips-head screwdriver is used to tighten or loosen screws with
positive slotted screws.
• Torx Screwdriver is used to tighten or loosen screws with star-like
depressions. This type of screw is commonly used in laptops.
• Hex Driver is sometimes called a nut driver. It is used to tighten or loosen
nuts.
• Needle-nose pliers are used for gripping small parts.
• Wire cutters are used for stripping and cutting wire.
• Tweezers are used for manipulating small parts.
• Part retriever is used for retrieving items or parts in areas where your hand
cannot fit.
• A flashlight is used to light up areas that you cannot see well.
• Wire Stripper is used to remove the insulation on a wire so that it can be joined
with other wires to create a cable.
• Crimper is used to attach terminals or connectors to wires.
• The punch-down tool is used to sack wires into termination blocks.

Cleaning Tools
To keep equipment in good running condition and to preserve its
condition, it must be kept clean at all times. Computer components can be very
sensitive and to ensure it is unharmed, you must use appropriate cleaning tools.
Below are the cleaning tools used in Computer Systems Servicing.
• Soft Cloth is also referred to as the lint-free cloth. It is used to clean
different computer components without scratching or leaving debris.
• Compressed Air is a can of air with a nozzle to blow away dust and debris
from computer components that are too sensitive to be touched.
• Cable Ties is a plastic strip with a self-lock to organize and bundle cables
inside and outside the computer neatly.
• Parts Organizer is where screws, jumpers, fasteners, and other small parts
are placed to prevent them from getting mixed.

Diagnostic Tools
Diagnostic tools are used to ensure that equipment or component is
functioning properly. Diagnostic tools are used to test and diagnose
equipment or components. The following are diagnostic tools used in Computer
Systems Servicing:

• The multimeter is a device that is used to measure voltage, current, and
resistance. It tests the integrity of circuits and the quality of electricity
in computer components. There are two types of multimeter: digital and analog.
A digital multimeter displays the information on an LCD or LED. An analog
multimeter displays information using scales.
• Loopback Adapter is also known as loopback plug. It is used to test the
functionality of computer ports.
• Cable Tester is used to test the functionality of ethernet cables which are
used to connect two or more computers and create a network.

CHECKING OF HAND TOOLS
There are many injuries that may occur while using hand tools on the job.
Many of these injuries occur from improper use, but there are also injuries
that involve a tool that was broken or in need of repair. What tool is being used
will decide what needs to be inspected on it. It is essential to check the tools before and
after using it. The following are some of the tips in using hand tools.
1. Keep tools clean. Dirty tools are harder to use safely and properly.
2. Do not modify hand tools. Keep the manufacturer’s design intact.
3. Secure all hand tools and store them away properly. Tools left out are
much more likely to be lost, stolen or damaged.
4. Used tool how they are designed to be used. This will keep the tool in good
condition longer and safe to be use.
UNSAFE OR FAULTY TOOLS
Hand tools include a wide variety of non-powered devices such as
wrenches, pliers, hammers, and screwdrivers. These tools may seem harmless,
but they are the cause of many injuries. The following are the safety practices related to
hand tools.
Pliers:
ü Do not increase the handle length of pliers to gain more leverage. Use a
larger pair of pliers or bolt cutters if necessary.
ü Do not substitute pliers for a wrench when turning bolts and nuts.
Pliers cannot grip these items properly and might cause a slip and
create an accident.
ü Never use pliers as a hammer on the handle. Such abuse is likely to result
in cracks or breaks.

ü Cut hardened wires only with pliers designed for that purpose.
ü Always cut the wires in right angle. Never rock from side to side or bend
wire back and forth against the cutting edges.
Screwdrivers:
ü Never use screwdrivers as a pry bar, chisel, and punch stirrer or
scraper.
ü Never use screwdrivers with broken or worn-out handles. Screwdrivers of these
kinds should have tags to indicate that it is defective.
ü Never use pliers on a screwdriver for extra leverage. Only use wrench or
screwdrivers specifically designed for purpose.
Utility Knives/ Blades:
ü Do not use dull blades because they require more force, thus are more likely to
slip.
ü Replace the blade when it starts to “tear” instead of cut.
ü Never leave a knife unattended with the blade exposed.
ü Don’t bend or apply side loads to blades by using them to open cans or
loosen tight cover of containers. Blades are brittle and can snap easily.
