An Introduction?

The OU Cisco Academy Support Centre
Introduction
• We are set up to offer either free or at low cost, access to the
Cisco Academy programme
• Currently we are a community of 54 Cisco Academies – covering
a range of charities, specialist educational providers, training
providers, schools, colleges, further education and universities.
• The ASC is led by Andrew Smith – Senior Lecturer in Networking
at the Open University, it is supported by Kevin Large and Paul
Wallin
4
Is it too good to be true?
5
We like to share …
Is it too good to be true?
• We were very fortunate in getting a Premier+
award from Cisco Systems late 2016
• With this came a modest bid allowance for
community development
• We decided that this project is how we would
spend the money
• We want to raise the number of CCNA1 and
Networking Essentials enabled teaching
professionals
6

You are not studying?
10
CCNA2, 3 and 4 or IT Essentials
You are not studying …
• You will not be studying the full CCNA Instructor training –
you are studying the first part only
• There are three additional courses
• Routing and Switching
• Scaling Networks
• Connecting Networks
• Approach your ASC/ITC for more information regarding
these
• Do not confuse Networking Essentials with IT Essentials
11
How will it work?
12
Making it work for you
How will it work?
• Weekly sessions via FBL (Facebook Live) –
you can attend by any means at your disposal
• These will always be on a Monday at 16:00 hosted by
Kevin Large
• Only the launch session will commence at 16:00 on
Tuesday the 14th
• All sessions will be recorded – you can attend ‘live’ or
watch later – ‘like it’ to let us know that you have
watched it
• Discussions, questions and queries always via
the Netacad ‘canvas’ inbuilt forums
• Support each other
• Support from us
13
Essential
How will it work?
• You MUST ensure that you are an instructor
user within a Cisco Academy
• We will add all applicants to the Open University
Incubator Community – ensuring you are all instructors
with a home
• From 7th to 14th of Feb is the window when we
solve any miscellaneous problems
• This is mainly supported by volunteers – please
be patient with us
14
Very essential
How will it work?
• Your email address that you have given us
MUST be the same one you are using for your
Cisco Academy Instructor profile
• Otherwise – it can be problematic … for you!
• We will be adding everyone to our ‘OU
Incubator’ academy
• This is a developmental space
• This is not the official Open University Cisco Academy
15
Local Language Support
How will it work?
• The content will be in US English
• However, we have a large community of
Portuguese speakers – we will happily host a
local language forum thread
• If other large communities emerge, we will
happily host threads in other languages.
• But – we expect you to support them as a community,
we cannot.
16
Discovery
How will it work?
• While the OU is very experienced at scalable
blended distance learning for students –
working with a large dispersed community of
teachers in this context is semi-experimental
• We will make mistakes
• We will learn from the community
• Lets have fun
17
What are your
commitments?
18
Study, Study, Study
Your Commitments
• Estimated study is 3-4 hours per week – some are
shorter, others longer – it will depend on you
• Complete chapter tests – we will not allow anyone to
take final unless you have completed ¾ (75%) of
chapters – you can do these at any time
• Attend FBL sessions when broadcast or watch
afterwards
• Complete Packet Tracer assessment at the end of
the course
• Complete course feedback
• Complete Cisco final exam
• Use a computer with a webcam where you can install WebEx
19
Packet Tracer Skills?
20
Version 7.0 – Is Compulsory
Packet Tracer Skills
• Make sure you install packet tracer 7.0
• Do complete the practical activities using packet
tracer
• Do not complete the ‘in class’ lab based
activities
• We will set a Skills Based Activity (SBA)
• This must be completed and emailed to
open.university.cisco@gmail.com
• If the SBA is not complete we will not pass you for the
course – preventing you from being able to teach
CCNA1 and Networking Essentials
21
The final assessment?
22
Compulsory
The final assessment
• You MUST complete the course feedback before you attempt the
final
• You will be allowed one attempt at a 70% pass mark
• You may be allowed a second attempt at a 80% pass mark
• You must install WebEx
• You must have use a computer with an attached working
webcam – this may mean the purchase of a low cost webcam –
we do not require any audio/microphone connection.
23
What do you gain?
24
The pros, no cons.
What do you gain
• Ability to use CCNA1 Routing and Switching – Introduction to
Networking – for teaching
• Ability to use Networking Essentials – for teaching
• Freedom to use this ‘teaching attribution’ in any Cisco Academy as
it belongs to you.
• Access to a variety of teaching resources, non-core courses and
supporting content from Cisco Systems.
• Affiliation with the Open University Incubator Academy
25
Will we do this again?
26
We do not know?
Will will do this again?
• This is based on a one time budget award.
• We do not have any plans for long term continual offering of this,
however if funding exists we may consider IT Essentials.
• If this is sufficiently popular and a suitable quantity of enrolled
instructors pass. We may explore making a case for another
attempt in the following academic year.
• If you are looking for CCNA2,3 and 4 – please approach your local
ASC/ITC.
27
Caveat Emptor
Boyer beware
28
Buyer beware …
Caveat Emptor!
29
Buyer beware …
Caveat Emptor!
• It is for free … we have designed the model based on a no-cost or
low-cost solution
• The structure and resources are ‘as is’, no alternative will be
provided – no matter how you feel
• We have kept it simple – if this is an issue, our belief is that you
may be on the wrong course
• This course will run to UK times and a UK educational calendar –
as this initiative is UK focused – however, we are more than happy
to include participants from all nations – running to our timetable
